There are pros and cons to them all - in terms of protection a hard box will be best but you wont get anything else into it!

In terms of soft bags, check them out at your local shop, open them up and feel the material and see if there is any padding for the bindings etc. Ask the shop staff - they should know which are strongest.

Great thanks.

I have a Head bag at the moment and it does have padding around the bindings.

Companies tend to change the specs of their bags each year or two and I haven't seen this years Head ski bags yet but last years Head bags seemed very well made and pretty heavy duty.

re skis, I use pieces of sheet foam about 15mm thick (like a camping pad) to give some extra protection around the bindings and tips. Use some scotch tape to hold the foam firmly in place. I've also used the same material to make a liner for an unpadded ski bag which works well.

I'm sure there must be hotel rooms in Austria with whole chunks of carpet underlayment missing, when Dave Mac has brought skis home at the end of the season

Sounds like i've opened a real can of worms with the Boot question! Thanks for the responses, looks like i'm off to buy a big bag to fit the boots in with the rest of the gear.

If it makes you feel any better Rose, i always get stopped through customs, the highlight being a transfer in Houston when my passport and tickets were put in a ziplock bag, security was called (loudly)and i was marched off to be interviewed as to why i was going to Costa Rica by a security guard who wanted to make chit chat! I was filling my pants by this point and was in bits by the time someone interviewed me, i could barely string a sentance together, couldn't have looked more guilty if i tried. Still don't know why they pick on me but am getting used to all the attention, if i ever hear the snap of rubber gloves though i'm doing a runner.

Trencher, you must have read Edward de Bono! I would never have thought of that use for carpet square offcuts! There was enough material too! Mmm~ have just thought this little aside will be wasted on many folk.

My bindings were always wrapped in end-of-season Y fronts, which after a season was probably all they were fit for.

It's actualy a problem for me. I think too laterally and some people struggle with it

I had noticed that! :D Interesting.

So, now that you recall the solution I took in my first season with compacted Kofflach boots, and given that at any given time, I never had more than £50 solvency, what solution might you have arrived at???

It's training like carpet cut-outs that sets you up for resolving life's issues.

I hope.
