As Dave Mac,

Stuff them with socks and placed in suitcase. Less grief in the long term.
Especially with my OH ski boots that got thrown around and damaged in boot bag in the planes hold several years back. Point blank refused as hand luggage with First Choice.

Glad I read all this.

We've just bought our own ski boots for this season and I wasn't sure of the protocol either so now they will be cosied up in their own pretty little bags then firmly and soundly packed in the suitcases.

well done folks, another mystery solved

I always tend to travel with my boots in my hold baggage, mainly for reasons already mentioned.
I dont however understand the airlines/airports reasoning for refusing them as hand luggage.
If your hand luggage is within advertised size and weight limits and contains no banned 'security' items what reason can they have for refusing them .... other than that by increasing your hold baggage weight they might be able to sqeeze more money out of you . (Cynical! Me!)
They are indeed sports equipment, but so are are golf shoes, running shoes, scuba fins etc.
The airlines/ airports will get away with whatever we let them get away with. So if its important to you ,complain. It probably wont make any difference the first time but if enough people do......

Many years ago my son travelled to Jersey with a group to play tennis, they all had their suitcases but had racket bags, they were told to take them on as hand luggage because their insurance would not cover for damage in the hold.

I'd have them for harrassment if they stop you this time. Those questions about the mobile and the Ipod are just ridiculous. Anyone is entitled to carry these items.

Thats what I thought. Hubby got his own back when we came back from Innsbruck. Waiting at baggage carousel every so often a boot shot through the baggage opening and booted cases, boot bags and ski's. My Hubby went through an open door at the side and threatened the handler with some-thing like, 'he will be the next item appearing on the baggage carousel on the end of his boot'. The luggage came through very gracefully after that.

Occasionall used to take a 5 string banjo to Niederau. Stood the banjo vertically in the centre of the rucsac, and wrapped clothing around, hence fully protected.

Or so I thought.

At Glasgow Airport, 2.00am, waiting for baggage to arrive at the carousel, I had a squint through the curtain. A baggage handler was stood on top of the trolley, piled high, throwing the bags off the top, on to the ground.

Result, when I got home, one broken Clifford Essex, neck snapped in two.
