Here we go again, its is Groundhog day. Again!

Ok, picking up on a couple of things here. I hear what Acko is saying - I believe a LOT of people think that by wearing a lid, they become invincible, bullteproof, indestructable.....and possibly even some people will ski faster or more carelessly as a result of wearing one. Controversial? Probably, but I bet I am right in some cases.
I've said it before on here, that those who wear a lid may possibly just think they are less likely to get hurt now. NOT TRUE, although I fully appreciate the getting wiped out and hitting your head scenario....

Also, I think he has a point leading into the eventual making wearing of helmets compulsory. I think its a matter of time, which is a shame, as the save the bobble campaign is going famously )
Seriously, skiing has always had a risk, thats never changed. I accept that maybe the slopes are busier these days, but I still dont see how anyone can possibly preach to us non helmet wearers about being wrong and telling us we "should" and suggesting we are inferior human beings as a result of it. I think what Acko is saying is that, as I have said before, we are going to be forced down some kind of health and safety line eventually until helmets become law.

As for motorbikes, I've never seen the attraction. Cold, wet, obviously massively higher risk of injury or death...... and I know too many people who have lost someone on a bike. I've seen too many idiots on bikes to have respect for the riders anymore, sorry to those that do ride on here, but thats my experience.

Acko's point is that by wearing a helmet, he was made to feel as if he was not going to get hurt on his bike. I think its the same with a lot of skiers.

Tony_H I'm in a feisty mood today so I'm comin atcha...

I completely agree that it shouldn't be made compulsory. That is not a thumb, and it's directed towards Brussels.

I think Acko's point about wearing a helmet and leathers and feeling safe in that example was an exaggeration for effect. At that speed the g force is around 4, steering is impossible, the rider is hyper aware of his surroundings, eyes glued to the tarmac way ahead, any slight movement in your body or head creates a break in the aerodynamics which affects the stability of the bike immediately etc etc. It's as much as anyone can do to just hang on, and I had someone to tuck behind. The idea of someone sitting there serenely thinking "wow I feel so safe" makes me laugh. So if you believe this example without question, do you also believe that this person would ski like a saint, right up until the point where they put a lid on and become a demon? I just doesn't make sense. I don't think it's anything to do with a helmet. It's the individual.

I'm going now. Got boring work to do :(
I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain

My wearing a helmet last year did not, in any way, make me feel the desire to be more reckless.

The fact that someone is taking a safety precaution makes me think they are less likely to be reckless.

Someone reckless would surely not want to wear a helmet in the first place?

I haven't fully fathomed how Brussels decide on their lawmaking but it's never seemed to be influenced by what people actually want.

So all we need to do to curb motorcycle accidents is to make them ride naked. Everyone would be crawling around to avoid a case of terminal road rash.

A helmet gives me some added confidence when I ski at my potential. It doesn't give me the confidence to be reckless. There are accidents on the slopes which are not caused by recklessness. They just happen. The type of accident that is caused by someone being reckless, or stupid is likely to happen whether that person is wearing a lid, or not. The vast majority of helmet wearers, do so, because they they are not reckless people.

The argument that the wearing helmets will increase the overall risk on the slopes, is totally insignificant compared to benefits.
because I'm so inclined .....
