I've seen a couple of high velocity collisions where people have been really lucky to have got away with minor injury.
Totally agree that the changing techniques have increased the likelihood of collisions happening, most of the near misses you see are people travelling at similar speed who accelerate out of a turn and their turns intersect.
Add to all of this that fact that mountain etiquette is rarely taught these days and the problem just gets worse.

That last sentence Andy is bang on

Some things have changed in four years. People are more used to carving, and are making allowances that weren't seen four years ago. I don't see as many close calls from the lift, as I used to.
because I'm so inclined .....

helmets at the end of the day could and can save your life! im a very experienced surfer, my latest surf trip my board hit me on top of my head! i had to have 4 stitches and scans, i was very lucky not to knock myself out and drown! so on my snowboarding trip in jan i think i'll be wearing my helmet :) although i prob wont drown snowboarding but its still better to wear one because i dont really want anymore head injuries :)

After 16 yrs and around 30 skiing holidays, I've just bought a helmet. Why? Number 1, my 6 year old daughter has to wear one so why not me? You try explaining this to a persistent 6 year old! Number 2, I ski a lot faster than I used to, particularly when carving. Number 3, everyone else is skiing faster but without a corresponding increase in control and awareness of piste conditions. Number 4, I've had a couple of near misses and seen several other wiped out.

Yeah, all is fine till some out of control idiot wipes you out from behind and just as you hit the white stuff another crashes into your head with thier skis - thank goodness my daughters had bought me a helmet for my 40th to help keep me alive till my 50th!

They must have had a premonition!

So I'm all for wearing them - but also for freedom of choice.

Has skiing become increasingly more dangerous now compared to 10 or 20 years ago?

Perhaps people that wear helmets think they can go more nutso than they normally would, increasing the risk of injuring themselves or others. I seriously think some of this new safety merchandising causes more problems indirectly than they solve directly.

Who would've thought strapping two long planks to your feet and shoving yourself down a mountain could be dangerous! The nerve of nature!

I think we are all very hypercritical by making our kids wear helmets and then not wearing them ourselves.
I recently fell off my push bike and hit probably the only rock around with my head. Split my helmet front to back...... Dread to think what would have been.
I always wear my mine. :)
I think they should insist on helmets when hiring kit. Most people who hire are beginners and more likely to be out of control.

Interesting comment. I'd be keen to hear (Admin....?) if this is the case.

Maybe we can get something useful out of a helmet thread after all, or is it Groundhog Day, again?
