Having got back from Niederau yesterday I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone on this board for all the useful info, tips and encouragement. The Sonnschein hotel was superb and the red ski school got this oldie beginner to come safely down a red by the end of the week with no damage to ego or body ;) Wanna go again! Soon !

Glad you had a great time, only 6 more sleeps and then we're off there :)

Hi Basketcase, where are you staying? Might catch up with you.

Hi Billip, I've just booked a week in Niederau leaving on the 23rd Jan. The wife and i are complete beginners like yourself and have booked the learn to ski package through Crystalski. it includes ski/boot hire, lessons and a 'beginners' lift pass (The other option was 'whole area' lift pass which i imagine allows you to go over to Oberau or Auffach and ski there). Just wondering if you could tell me where your lift pass covered you for, and whether it was in any way limited? Would it only allow you access to some of the lifts?

Nice to read that you had a great time also....getting us all excited!

Complete beginners do not need to book a lift pass. You may not need a pass until day 2 or 3, and you might just need to buy points instead. Your instructor will advise you.

Hi there, I would go along with the Coop's comment about the lift pass. Ours certainly took us on all the button lifts and T-lifts in Niederau as well as the gondola up to the top of the mountain with the restaurants and of course the other slopes and button lifts up there as well, and frankly, that was plenty for me as a beginner, more in fact that I could hope to use in a week. Of course, for an advanced skiier it might well be a different thing. The advanced skiers at our hotel seemed to spend a bit more time in Auffach. Have a great time; if you are in the red ski school give my best wishes (from Bill) to the instructor Martin.

We learnt to ski in Niederau in '96 with the red ski school (excellent). We booked through Inghams and our "Learn to Ski" pack included a beginners ski pass which covers all of Niederau and possibly Oberau but we only skiied in Niederau. I'm pretty sure it doesn't cover Auffach. The beginner/nursery slopes in Niederau are all in the village so those of you who've booked beginner lessons will be on those for 2-3 days and then you'll go up top on the gondola. )

Hey all,

Can anyone tell me what the evenings are like in Niederau, and recommend anywhere we should spend some time?

hey,
the best place to go for apres ski is the sport cafe, which is on the main road. Great fun for a few hours straight after ski school - a lot of the instructors and locals go there and it's always great fun. Bobo's at the bottom of the main nursery slope is also good for apres ski, and does a lovely gluewhein. There's the irish bar O'Malleys which is also in the centre of the village which seems to have different gigs most nights, and there's a couple of really nice places on the outskirts of the village which are really good too. I think one of them is called the baurkeller? (Please help here LDavies!) You'll have a great time I'm sure.

Hi Dave, we are staying at Alpenland, I hope we dont regret it as we had a great time at Harfenwirt last year. Could have a beer together if you like, when are you there mate?
