Ian, I think you are far blinkered. I read with interest that you personally feel you were done by them on a technicality. Bottom line is they give you 15kg baggage allowance, if you are not overweight with it then they dont charge you, simple. They also make it absolutely clear what the limits and dimensions are for hand luggage, so again if you stick to what you are aware is correct, you wont get stung for extra charges, so please feel free to enlighten us as to what caused them to charge you extra, if you were adhering to the limits....
Its people who turn up with 2 cases weighing 25kg each or forget their passport and then try to blame the airline who really make me laugh.
If you google reviews on airlines, there are plenty of people with gripes against lots of airlines around the world and not just Ryanair. Whilst as I have said before I would probably not choose them to fly with given another option, I have used them a number of times without any problems and without being charged additional fees. Every airline lets people down from time to time, but Ryanair actually now do have a particularly good record of on time flights.
This venedtta against Ryanair I believe comes from people who probably havent adhered to the regulations or expect too much from an airline who provide a limited standard of service.

We return five days later to Bergamo only to be told that there was an excess baggage charge to pay as we were over 15Kg, they ( Ryan air ) told us "if we did not want to pay the excess charge we should go and buy another suitcase and transfer 4Kg of luggage into the case then there would be no charge".
Now Tony put yourself in a similar position and I really don't think you would be a happy little J2skier.

I thought so. It was your own fault and not Ryanair's that you were faced with additional costs.
Ian - their policy clearly states luggage at 15kg per person 1 bag. You were overweight, and somehow got away with it, so you say, on the way out. Lucky you, as you avoided a further and justified charge. On the way back, you were rightly informed your luggage was overweight. It is irrelevant that you got away with it on the way out, as you got away without more charges. And you were lucky they suggested you get another case and split the weight, as that would have got you off without extra costs, but instead you chose to apportion blame to the airline who simply stuck to their policies.
Sorry pal, I have no sympathy and you cant go around demanding refunds or claiming they are robbers when it was simply down to your ignorance/attempt at bending the rules/niavety.
I am sure you dont intend to use Ryanair yourself, but I think you are very wrong in suggesting others dont just because you messed up and got caught out.
I bet if you turned up having left your passport at home you would blame the airline for not letting you fly.

Tony.......I love it when I'm right, As we always take one bag, I always ensure I pay for two bags, I did not try and fiddle the carrier, I am very much up front with all dealings I under take, so I not only had to pay €50 excess baggage but I had already paid for a second bag, so to normal people that would give us 30 kg to cover the excess, it applied ok to the people at Stansted but not by the ryan air staff at Bergamo.
If you had read more carefully and were not so quick to jump to the conclusion that I was trying to fiddle the carrier you would have seen that I wrote, and I re quote : b]"if we did not want to pay the excess charge then we should go and buy another suitcase and transfer 4Kg of luggage into the case then there would be no charge".[/b] from that statement they new that I had paid for two bags.
As for the point that you think it is wrong that I am suggesting to people "do not use Ryan air"...... I believe the J2 skiers are bright enough to make up their own minds through their own experiences whether they agree or disagree with my argument, in my limited experience of forums I take in the information and then make a rational decision, I'm sure the rest of the J2ski members do the same. 8) 8)

Edit: I forgot to mention that the check in staff are incentivised to increase revenue.

Rules or no rules.
I can see why you are gnashing your teeth Ian, even if strictly speaking Ryan Air have only followed their policy.

But thats the issue, it is a technicality which on the outward journey I had no problem, the inflexibility of the return journey is what lead to my annoyance...... I read on this forum people packing as much as they can into their ski bag, putting two sets of skis in a bag only paying for one, I do everything by the book the only error I made was taking one bag instead of two, how ridiculous can red tape be.
They saw an opportunity to make some extra cash, that was very short sighted of them as they have now lost one regular traveller well two with Mrs W and maybe many more. 8) 8)
