That does not make any sense at all. Most people will do things themselves (if they can) BECAUSE you have to pay other people to do it.

FWIW, I have some sympathy with that - and spyderjon (John Coster)who does my skis - by hand - is no ordinary shop. But it is quite an effort to drive out to him, and I know I could service my Missions myself. I hope to have workshop space again by the beginning of next season, so maybe I will set myself up. One thought: I may be a keen skier - but I ski but 3 weeks a year. On that basis, a 200g pack of wax would last me about 4 years. Does ski wax have a shelf life?

No it doesn't really, I have had some wax for a few years the real old stuff I tend to keep in my boot bag to rub on the edges at the end of a holiday to stop rusting.. 8)

Ps you can buy wax in smaller packs just shop around
