I get this all the time. In fact it's holding me back on improving my skiing.

i'm 31 and have a fantastic level of cardio fitness, just can't get past the burn! I am not a light person though - perhaps that's it.

how does that rock your theory!

you're leaning back too far, I think someone pointed that out a while back  not sure if that's the theory you're referring or not.

I had that big time this trip, and it still hurts. I wondered if I wasn't stretching enough but I'm now beginning to wonder if it's all the knee strapping... My brace (and strapping on the other knee) is done up really tight so pushes my calf muscle down. I then put my boots on and it pushes the muscle back up so it feels like it's being condensed into a 3 inch gap. It was alright when I skiing but when I took the boots off... man alive

Its quite normal. People who go skiing once, twice or maybe 3 times a season if they are lucky ( )) will probably find they get tired muscles, particularly in their calves and quads/thighs. Nothing to be alarmed about, just your body telling you that you are doing more than normal and to be careful. Refueling and taking small short rests is usually the answer, but dont be surprised to wake up the next day and find you are as stiff as a board.

Some people of course dont get this, and then suggest that its not normal or there is something wrong with the way you are skiing, without having ever seen you ski, which is of course ridiculous.

I skied with 7 people in St Anton, all of different ages, levels of fitness, etc but all of a decent standard, and everyone found calves or thighs were aching to varying levels. Some morning I woke up and my calves were painful to touch, but as soon as I was in my boots done up and on skis, it wasnt even noticeable. By the end of a full on day, my quads would let me know when I had had enough.

Like I said, perfectly normal for the vast majority of regular peeps like us. Just make sure you put back plenty of the right sort of liquid into your body to recover. Water and mars bars usually does the trick for me up on the mountain, or maybe one of those lovely hot chocolates with the squirty cream......

Calf ache is a bit hard to diagnose without seeing someone skiing and can be related to boots, the ache in thighs is an easy one, it's 99% or more certain caused by leaning back too far. That's often made a lot worse when people try and ski off-piste or in powder and try to lean back as was discussed here a couple of weeks ago.
