All,
I've created a monster...for what it's worth I try to avoid Ryanair as they don't seem to go out of their way to be particularly pleasant to customers, however they're cheap and I'll put up with this for the cheapest ticket...call me mercenary

My last 3 flights with the orange ones have been late....including last night's. No idea why, no information given
Easy. Its because Easyjet and Ryanair pay much less for their slots than other airlines, hence why they have such fast turnrounds. If they miss their slot, they get relegated into the next available cheap one, which might not be 20 minutes later.
I experienced a very fast and seemingly dangerous landing at Berlin in 2005 with Easyjet: rapid approach, serious braking and reverse thrust, and a fast swerve off the runway onto the taxiway. I later discovered that they actually get some kind of bonus for being on the ground for a shorter period of time, something to do with landing fees at certain airports. Kind of explains some of the cheap airlines interesting landings....
You should fly to Treviso (Venice) then ! )

"Within the European Union, air passenger rights are now stronger than those under current U.S. requirements. However, the European program is still a work in progress, with concerns about whether all countries are properly enforcing them "
That kind of sums it up. Ryanair et al.

I think the low cost airlines are great for last minute deals but if you plan well ahead you can get fantastic deals with the big airlines. We got our flights with BA to Salzburg 20th December for £86 return, admittedly we booked them at midnight on the day they were released but if you want a bargain then that's a small price to pay. I have never flown with Ryanair so can't comment but I have never had any problems with Easyjet, having said that BA is always my first choice, price permitting.

here's my tuppence worth on budget airlines and a little story on car hire.
I personally have had no problems with Ryanair, I know it's irritating having to do all the add-ons to get to a final price and for skiers we end up having to pay quite steep baggage charges, but it still generally works out cheaper, and if you're going on a city braks with just a small on board bag it's amazing value.
...and to the car hire. Last year I had booked Ryanair flights to Carcasonne to ski the Pyrenees but it was raining and apparently Carcasonne has no system to land planes in the rain (flew back from there and I could see why - it was a nissan hut in a field!). The flight was diverted to Perpignan and Ryanair did lay on buses to Carcasonne although it would take about an hour to turn up. I had a car booked with Europcar at Carcasonne but wondered if they would let me have one at Perpignan and take it back to Carcasonne. Off I toddled to the desk only to find my car was booked at Toulouse!!! Entirely my fault as I had orginally booked Easyjet flights to Toulouse that were cancelled but I forgot to change the car hire!! but no matter, the very nice lady gave me a car at Perpignan to take back to Carcasonne with no extra charge whatsoever. In stark contrast to people at the Avis desk next door who had no interest in the problem and told their customers they'd have to get on the bus.
