I guess the only real solution is to go high - go a little later than normal (ie March) and go to a large area.

I'm going to Avoriaz on the 14th March (lads trip) and then to La Plagne (with my 7 yr old son) on 5th April. Granted it will probably be a bit mushy after lunch in La Plagne, but my son will get a good lesson in the morning and I can get up high. Come the afternoon we'll ski together at about 2000m. Done the same last year and it was just right.

You'll never know, unless you try...

Just came back from Meribel, the weather was good - sunny warm and skiing in the morning was fantastic, a bit mushy in the afternoon though. Also on Monday there was a strike in Courchavel, result - huge crowds in Meribel. So be careful.

Going to Saalbach on March 15th, was there in Jan last year - it was awful, lots of rain. Was there in Jan this year and it was great. All I have to say is that the further it gets the more difficult it is to predict the weather, but good luck and good snow to us all )

QUESTION - Would you be mad / stupid or even just desperate enough to pay £10 - to find out my dates of travel and intended resort - just to share my potential good luck??

Never know - could pay for the whole trip!!!!!!!

What's a tenner ??? In return for super snow!!!!

Someone quick :!: twist his ear and deflate that big head of his

just back from morzine/avoriaz. Bad news I'm afraid, rained last 4 days of the week at all levels. Constant drizzle. OK base at top but even up there starting to turn slushy. Needed windscreen wipers on goggles. Toured the whole area - Swiss side of Porte du soleil just as bad. Avoriaz a bit better but really really packed with skiers as a result. Best skiing was in la linga area. Claim they're to get snow next week but seems to warm to me. Going higher next time. Cross your fingers and best of luck.

Interesting, bad news for you but I'm reassured that my eyes weren't actually deceiving me, I thought it looked fairly poor over that way and then I read some stuff claiming it was just fine which surprised me.

Looking at the forecasts that snow forecast this week seems to have vanished as well.

Just back from Sauze. The whole of the Vialattea is in dire need of snow now. We arrived last Sunday 24th, and the first 3 days were really good, although the snow off the pistes was fading fast. Best snow in the region is in Sestriere by a long way, but the link across from Sauze was dicey to say the least - lots of bare patches, stones, and mush. Not good when you have your own skis.
We did a day in Montgenevre on Friday, which had good snow, but it was cutting up badly past lunchtime.
The overnight temps have been just above freezing, meaning cannons cant be used, and the daytime temp, believe it or not, topped 20c at the middle lift in Sauze.
The resort iteslf was totally shut by the Saturday afternoon after high winds came in overnight, so we only managed 3 runs on the last day, but it wasnt too disappointing, because despite the decreasing conditions, we got 5 full days of excellent skiing.
Unfortunately, those people arriving yesterday in 24c heat, and seeing the run into the village, which was by now brown and wet, must have wondered what they were going to do.
I am informed by the locals that temps will drop dramatically on Wednesday and some snow is expected. However, the officials have said that they may well close the whole resort early this week, and possibly not even open it again for the remainder of the season, which sounds a little dramatic to me, but some people arriving at Turin are already being redirected to other resorts where there is more snow, ie Cervinia.
I met a couple who ski'd in Bardonecchia, and they had a similar experience to mine in Sauze.
Its not looking good for this region at all.

Hi Everybody

Just back from Tignes on Saturday. Despite the lack of any meaningful snow for nearly 4 weeks and quite warm temperatures, the pistes were generally in very good condition and we had a great week.

However, best to stay high (Grand Motte glacier area remains perfect) as some lower slopes did tend to turn into porridge by early afternoon, particularly if South facing whiles stones were beginning to be a problem on a few runs.

Some light dustings of snow during the week did help a little but colder temps and a good dump are really needed at this stage (I gather the limited snow we got fell as rain in lower resorts- yuck!).

Unfortunately, thats my skiing over for this year :(. Have to get the occassional fix by watching skiing on TV and clips on Youtube, etc.!!!

It's certainly got a lot colder, I wished I'd put a different jacket on today actually. It's about -8' now at 1500m which is not bad for March. The new snow has improved the conditions here at least, last week I was hooning around on slalom skis on hard back and today it's gunning chutes at high speed in powder, what a difference a week makes )
