bald-eagleman wrote:Thanks for that Ally. We have decided to transit via Bristol to recover lost son then go up to Gatwick early and stay at a hotel. Never thought I'd be saying " thank goodness there is no more snow today"

Good luck to everyone traveling away today and I hope you all manage to get to your destinations. BUT above all....BE SAFE.

Well, watch out you don't get stuck in your car in minus 10! I was reading the news and it seems even Jeremy Clarkson had to abandon his car near Oxford, because the roads were so bad.

Going to Gatwick early and staying in a hotel (if you can get a booking that is!) seems like a very good idea :D

Best of luck everyone.

From the coalface:

Luton - open but major delays and very difficult local roads

Heathrow - total chaos and best avoided at all costs. It may open tomorrow but no incoming flights today and very few outgoing. T1 closed first thing which caused massive local traffic problems.
I do not expect it to be pretty tomorrow at all down there.

Just spoken to our guests in Chalet Camomille in Les Gets. They have arrived safely but had a 3 hour delay at Luton.

I hope you all got out, there are great conditions out there. We flew into Gatwick last night with Monarch, 5 hour delay but least they didn't cancel any flights.

I just can't believe the chaos caused by the Heathrow closure, yes they have had some snow but come on the worlds busiest airport closed

Having spent a week without seeing much in the way of fresh snow, we got back in to London City from Geneva yesterday at about 9pm, having had our original Saturday morning flight cancelled, then rebooked onto a Heathrow flight for Sunday morning, also cancelled.

The airline, Swiss, really looked after us. They put us all up in a good hotel for the night and fed us well.

It looked like if you could make it out, you will find plenty of fresh powder. Unfortunately we only got to drive on it on the way home.

I agree. There's no excuse for the airports to be ill prepared. Why can't they do what they do in Wimbledon when it rains? Pull giant tarpaulins across the runways and taxi areas with tractors. Then when it stops, hook up one side of the tarpaulins to the tractors again, section by section, to pull it back off the runway etc, snow and all. The money these airports make, they've got no excuse not to invest in some plastic and a few vehicles even if they are only used a couple of times per year. Gotta be cheaper than cancelling/delaying flights too.

And before someone points out the obvious, yes I know it would be on a huge scale in order to cover the area needed. Doesn't make it impossible though.
I wish I could meet the person who first decided to strap 2 planks to their feet and throw themselves down a mountain

The fact that BAA is not a national company but a private one sold to foreign investors seems to be a bad idea. As does its huge monopoly over the Southern airports. They don't have to invest. People won't choose to use another airport and the government can't seem to apply any pressure.

Kudos to the airports that have managed to stay open over the last month.
