I can echo all of geo's sentiments. Skiing re-hooked itself on me after 30 years' gap. Rauris was a beautiful place to go - excellent instructor (the Karl Maier Ski School is apparently renowned), and a charming resort. Our intended trip to Salzburg never materialised, so now we have to go back in the summer. Notwithstanding that, we are defo going back (and to Rauris) next winter.

Hi. In the spirit of the enthusiasm coming out of these postings, I'd like to add that I posted a message on here in December as an apprehensive middle-aged beginner who had booked a package to Niederau in early January, looking for advice. Everyone on here was really helpful and encouraging, and the week's holiday was tremendous. I just thought I'd pass on that I had the opportunity to spend a few days down there again last week and took a couple of half-day lessons as well as skiing on my own. I was reminded what a tremendous place Niederau is and only wish I hadn't waited until quite so late in life before getting going ! Now looking forward to January ! The red-ski school instructors had their end-of-season race on Saturday, but I couldn't tell you how it went as I could not bring myself to leave the Markbachjoch slopes to watch the race; by the way, Gunther's bar was still going strong right up until the end of the week !

Billip,
Thanks for letting us know how you got on, and I'm really pleased you had a great time :D
I might even go to Niederau myself one day, so that Dave Mac can teach me to dance - if his wife doesn't mind

Well, Ally, if Dave Mac loses his dancing shoes and can't make it, just let me know

Thanks Billip, that's very kind of you :D
Tony, I have to admit I would like to go there just to see what all the fuss is about. It looks really lovely in the photos, and Dave Mac says it's really close to lots of other ski resorts, so I would think it would be perfectly possible to get a taxi to them, assuming there's no bus, if I managed to ski all of Niederau and Auffach and wanted somewhere else to go.
Maybe I will go there, one day ... :D
