Thanks, Ise. Useful to know that, especially as Haglofs is better priced stuff.
I noticed a lot of Mammut and Marmot stuff too, which looks very similar.
The best ski jackets?

There are a few very different lines in the Spyder range and it is best that these are looked at individually->they make some really poor kit but also some seriously good stuff.
A lot of fake Spyder stuff/old Spyder stuff is terrible but the one I have right now is probably the best jacket I have ever had. If it is good enough for CR it is good enough for me!
Thats a reet good deal on that jacket.
This is a personal fave of mine though:

There's a lot of tag-hag stuff going on in skiwear IMHO. People are very label-conscious... and price can be a poor indicator of quality.
I have gone through Helly H (good, great value, but got nicked); North Face layered job (rubbish - waterproofing was bad, zips were cheap and very hard to do up esp with freezing fingers), a Salomon that I had on loan that was good but I got the wrong size and it was just blimmin massive, and the latest was an Eider that I got discount from Snow & Rock. I love it.
At the less expensive end of its range, I think North Face is trading heavily on its brand name. I asked two ski shop owners last year what they rated and they all thought it was hilarious how much the 'fashion' names charged... and added that they didn't think much of Spyder.
If the author of the thread wants VFM, have a look at the upper end of the Decathlon stuff - not expensive, but good features...

Thank you all for contributing to this thread....I'm still considering my options so do keep your comments coming, although a trip to Ellis Brigham would seem to be the sensible thing.
Thanks again

Loads of the locals were wearing Quecha and Wedze gear in Serre Che - thats the stuff you can get in Decathlon. Some of it is ok.
I think North Face has suffered because it has entered the general fashion market as well as what it intended to do, ie winter/mountain sports. As a result, they have launched jackets that are more for wearing to the football than to heading up a mountain, and black is most certainly en vogue on the football terraces these days, mainly thanks to Manchester United's Red Army, for means of being harder to identify.
However, I think its also wrong to pooh pooh a particular brand because some of their stuff isnt so good, or because one individual had a bad experience with one jacket.
I do think that more people are fashion conscious with their ski wear than ever before, not necessarily brand conscious. If that was the case, I wouldnt be bombing around in a D2B jacket, would I?
