I did the test and mine said 0.22 Mbps upload and 0.49 Mbps download. What does that mean?

It means ur download is about half a meg in common terms and your upload is about a quarter meg.

The uk average download is now around 7 meg so you are WAY below what most people get, i feel very sorry for you.
As you can see from mine i get way beyond the average at over 50meg.

Your speed would be enough for me to consider moving house as i love my internet access and use it heavily. As you said previously it is fine for a bit of browsing and emails but as the internet develops you are going to suffer if they don't do something.

I can't see that being much of an option really as mobile providers insist on pathetically low caps on usage.
4G will eat up most allowances in minutes.

It means your broadband connection is crap!!

My test results-

1.82 download

0.36 upload

Not quite as crap but nothing to write home about. When the kids are on Xbox live everything grinds to a halt.....

Well I think I will go with Far Queue's idea and phone the Welsh Assembly to ask about a grant for satellite broadband. Apparently they will give you up to £1000 to install a suitable system if your download speed is less than 2 MB per second, and since mine appears to be only 0.49 MB's per second perhaps they will give me an internet satellite.

And then I just have to find a company that would do it for me and not charge the earth in monthly charges. At the moment we only pay something like £18 per month with AOL for the broadband (unlimited downloads) and free telephone calls at any time to mainline numbers. All we have to pay on top of this if we don't phone a mobile etc. is the quarterly telephone line rental charge with BT (which costs a fortune - around £50).

We were stuck with dial up for years, because it's about 4 miles from where we live to the exchange via the telephone lines (it's only 2 miles direct). What we have now is a big improvement on what we did have.

I thought dial up used to be 56kbps? Or was it even slower when it first started?

I'm getting very confused with all these kiloBytes and megaBytes.

Is 0.49 Mbps the same as 490 Kbps? If it is then that means that my internet (slow as it is) is currently something like 10X faster than it used to be when it was dial up.
