Hi,

We are going skiing on 8th January.
Our preferred destination is Austria.
We have not skied there before.
I am a good skier, while Mrs B likes long blue runs ideally served by a gondola.
I am worried about snow condition in some nice, low resorts like Kitzbuhel or Saalbach.
Looking at the piste maps Ischgl or Mayrhofen do not have any long blue runs back to resorts.
What would you recommend, please, apart from St Anton?

Cheers:)

Soll has a lovely long blue run through the trees back to the village. It's a track so it gets a bit narrow and if the snow is not great then sometimes it is closed but that's only been once in the 3 times I've been.

Obergurgl has nice long blue runs, and no worry about whether there will be enough snow - although it is pretty expensive.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your advice ).

Have you skied in Soll in early January.
Snow is my biggest worry, otherwise SkiWelt area looks tempting.

Hi AllyG,

Obergugl is on my shortlist.
My only criticism would be that apparently all runs are above tree line?

Also do you not find the skiing area rather limited?
Is it easy to travel for a day skiing to Solden using local public transport?

Regards,

Mrs Smoothie and I are big fans of the Skiwelt. We've been mid Jan for the last 3 years and the snow has always been great. One year it was a bit slushy at the bottom of runs down to the villages and off piste was often snow free but they have a fantastic infrasructure for making snow. I've heard that in March it can be a bit rubbish but mid Jan should be perfect.

Hope that helps.

There are some runs below the tree line in Obergurgl, and more next door in Hochgurgl which are easily accessed either by bus or by the Hochgurgl express gondola.

The ski area is small, 110 km of runs. But you can pay 10 euros extra on your lift pass to have a day's ski-ing in Solden as long as you pay it at the beginning when you take out the pass. http://www.obergurgl.com/main/EN/GG/WI/skigebiet/skipasspreise/kombi_card/index.html

I know some people did go over to Solden to ski, so I should imagine there is a public bus but I don't actually know. You could e-mail the Obergurgl tourist board to check.

Ischgl and Schladming would be my 2 choices for a January trip to Austria, both have runs back to resort. Ischgl has a bigger area and probably better snow, but its mainly above the tree line, Schladming is much more in the trees. I really like the look of the place. Saalbach has god cruises and runs back to resort.
St Anton is simply brilliant, but your Mrs might prefer Lech, if you can afford it )
I'm off to Mayrhofen in Feb, no runs back to resort but fantastic skiing and a cracking little town.
