Hi Biki,
Congratulations on your choice of country, such wisdom. There will be an Ian Wickam along soon, attempting to convert you, just listen politely, and smile.....
Given your location, and date, my suggestion would be to leave your decision late. From your location, it is difficult to conceive there would be a lack of flights. The 8 January is already starting to attracting price reductions, and is usually one of the best value weeks of the season.
Hence, you can wait until you see if destinations such as Söll or Saalbach, have a) a good snow base, b) a good forecast.

Dave Mac, just when you thought it was only Wickers that would be along to try for a conversion :D

I suggest defecting to Switzerland. Crans Montana may suit your needs with several long gondolas, plenty of tree lined runs, abundant blues and a sunny aspect for those chilly early January days.

Snow is my biggest worry, otherwise SkiWelt area looks tempting.

Mrs Smoothie and I are big fans of the Skiwelt. We've been mid Jan for the last 3 years and the snow has always been great. One year it was a bit slushy at the bottom of runs down to the villages and off piste was often snow free but they have a fantastic infrasructure for making snow. I've heard that in March it can be a bit rubbish but mid Jan should be perfect.

Hope that helps.

Steve

Hi Steve,

That sounds assuring.
Is Soll your favourite base in SkiWelt or do you prefer one of the smaller vilages up the valley?

Hi Dave,

We know that Austria is the best for the most important ski criteria, i.e. beer, gluwein, spas
I might just wait a bit longer before selecting specific resort.

Cheers

Hi Bandit,

We skied Verbier last season.
We both liked it very much apart from prices of beer (no happy hours in sight:(
This year we would like to taste Austria.
No doubt we would like to revisit Switzerland soon, however my top choice would probably be Zermatt and Jungfrau (views!).
Cheers,

Zermatt is pretty cool, and we have a resident J2skier, Tino_11. I'll be skiing there next month, and AFAIK there is at least 1 more J2skier there pre Xmas :D

Expect Verbier levels of pricing!

I'd be worried about going somewhere that has slush and no off piste in January. Maybe that explains why I haven't yet skied that area.
