Hi All,
Off to La Thuille in 2 weeks with the GF and her familly and the weight for ski bags on the plane is 6kg. My Nomads and 2 sets of poles are 9.5kg so will have to pay an excess charge.
6kg seems pretty low to me as even my tiny 155cm slalom skis are over 5kg. Are airlines being realy stingy and making everyone pay an excess or have I just got heavy skis?!
Does anyone have any idea how much the excess weight charge will be? And does the cost go up per extra kg? If it is a flat charge, I may as well take 2 sets of skis with me anyway.
Annoying!

Thomson Ski perhaps?
Perhaps an email to the company may give you a definite answer. I'm with you totally on the nonsense of the 6kg. Your skis are not particularly heavy. Someone at the co. has no idea about ski kit (clearly).
Please let us all know how you get on with this.
That doesn't seem to be the case for EasyJet.
If you pre-pay, then their ski/sports carriage fee is a not unreasonable £16.50 (each way). They don't appear to have a specific limit on the ski bag either, rather...
I usually manage to get my baggage under 20kg, including ski boots, so that would leave 12kgs for skis - above which there is excess baggage fee to be paid. Fair enough I think.
Full info (unless I missed something) is under Section 10 of this page :-
http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Book/regulations.html#baggage
However, the 6kg limit being imposed on Tom is stupidly small - can you identify the airline and/or Tour Operator responsible for the limit Tom? It may be worth trying to persuade them of the error of their ways... 8)

Here we go again......
....this has been well covered on other threads.
However, Ryanair/Easyjet are now charging £50 return for skis and have a very low limit on ski bags. They will weigh your bag, and may also ask you to open it, and anything in there that isn't ski's you may have to put in other bags, and this may impact on the weight of your baggage.
Its all a bit of a pain in the bum, and yet another way the budget airlines take the mick out of their customers.
Be careful with what you pack and how you pack it, unless of course you are using a more "friendly" airline.

Payment of the additional fee increases your checked-in hold baggage allowance (including additional item) to a maximum weight of 32kgs.

You are spot on Admin Dave. In fact, I am taking skis just in one direction next week, so only had to pay £16.50.
Of course, I don't like my skis to be lonely on that long journey, so have included some "stiffening" behind each ski. I admit that the "stiffening" does resemble a pair of skis, but that the way it has to be shaped. Total weight of skis and "stiffeners" is 8.5kgm. Might need to put a pair of salos around them as protection.
And I will have a spare set of bindings in main baggage.

Well having come back from Turin on Sunday, I can confirm that Thomas Cook airlines(Nielson as the TO) pretty much don't car what your ski stuff weighs.
The 3 of us who took ski bags all had bags weighing between 8 and 12kg and the ladies on the check-in desks (both in Manchester and Turin) didn't bat an eyelid. It seems strange that their policy wording says 6kg but in reality they don't bother to check. Maybe its just so not too many people take very heavy bags.
On a slightly different note, Turin airport is rubbish!
3 flights from different english airports all landed at the same time with at least 100 people waiting for ski/board bags. The outsize luggage area is a single conveyer belt that just comes out of the wall (not in a loop). This means that if the 8 ski bags on the belt don't belong to someone stood there, the rest of the bags don't come out until they have all been claimed. People were also not willing to pick up the bags and prop them against the wall so that more bags could be sent out. This mess cost us our sunday afternoon skiing which was rubbish.
