Hi guys,

I am due to go to Zermatt Dec 30th, arriving on 22.25pm Easyjet flight. Hotel booked and everything ..... obviously my own fault but i thought somehow a train or bus would be going. Looks like no buses or trains run that late unfortunately Sad

Anyone know of a relatively painless way to get from Geneva to Zermatt around that time like spare seat in minibus or car or coach or anything :-) ? any help at all is much appreciated

Many thanks

(* i've tried to change my flight to earlier time and also cancel the hotel ... but neither were possible)

Unless you get really lucky I think you'll have to resign yourself to spending the night at Geneva airport. The first train to Zermatt departs at 05:11 arriving in Visp at 07:52 where you catch the 08:10 to Zermatt (platform 3) which arrives at 09:14.

There are some large luggage lockers (CHF 5) on Zermatt railway station (if the ones on the platform are full ask at the ticket office), so if you change into your ski clothing on the way you could hit the slopes straight away.

If you haven't already got one get a Swiss Transfer Ticket http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/produkttexte.php?passid=3 it will save you CHF 60.

Thanks a lot for the info .... I am beginning to think you are right and the 5am train is the realistic outcome.

I checked the website you gave, thanks ..... looks like I can get Geneva-to-Zermatt for £79gbp return.

You think i should book that now and commit to it ?? rather than seeing if I can grab a lift at the airport (then if not, buy train tickets in the morning)

Last year we stayed for a night in the Ibis hotel at Geneva airport. It's pretty cheap (cheapest rate £67 pn per room) and they do free transfers to and from the airport between 5-30 a.m. and 11-15 p.m.

If it was me I'd definitely book a hotel, get train tickets and catch the train in the morning, like SwingBeep suggested. 10-25 p.m. is pretty late to be looking for a lift, and after collecting your luggage and allowing for delays it's going to be even later. And even in a car I think it's about a 3 hour journey from Geneva to Zermatt so you wouldn't be there until about 2 in the morning.

Hello!

To SB; are you back from Zermatt? We're leaving in 4 days for Zermatt & St Moritz, & was curious what the conditions were like.

Hope you had a great time!

Cheers

Considering Zermatt only received 8% of the normal amount of precipitation in January, the pistes are holding up remarkably well. In the Sunnegga sector there are a few rocks on Piste 12 Schneehuhn (from Rothorn to Kumme), and Piste 19 Fluhalp (from Fluhalp to Gant) is a bit icy.

Cervinia has more snow, but the run down to Valtourneche from Salette is icy.

The forecast is for it to get warmer again next week.

Are you travelling from Zermatt to St Moritz on the Glacier Express?

I skied St Moritz 2 weeks ago and the slopes were in amazing condition. It was seriously cold, and they have had fresh snowfall since I came back.
You pay top dollar for the lift pass for a reason.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, we are taking the Glacier Express to St. Moritz. We heard very nice things about it, so we're excited.

We've been watching the Zermatt snow reports for the last month; I knew it wasn't great, but I had no idea they were so far below normal.
Oh well, nothing you can do about the weather.

We're from the northeast U.S., so we're used to & little snow with our ice; although having said that, this has been one of the swowiest winters in years.
