Hi,
How many hours of lessons (private lessons or in a group) are usually sufficient to start snowboarding independently, for a beginner ?
I know it is individual, but would like to get an idea of the average amount of lessons usually required.
Thanks.

Last year my 14 year old daughter and her friend had 6 hours of private lessons and were confidently boarding red runs by the end of the week.
They had had about 4 hours on a dry slops previously, but were still pretty much total beginners.

Thanks for your reply, Dids.
How do you recommend dividing the tuition hours ?
How many hours a day, and for how many days ?

So much depends on the person doing the learning, and their previous experiences with other sports. The first day can be quite tiring, as you can't use the lift at first, so need to hike up the bunny hill a bit. For this reason, make sure the resort you are going to, has a short carpet type lift. You can use these lifts with very little experience. If you are fit, I would go for a two/three hour lesson on the first day, and maybe a shorter lesson, if you are out of shape. Take a day off from lessons, to practice what you have learned at your own pace. Then take another morning lesson on the third day maybe. Piling lesson, upon lesson without time to practice in between, can be a waste. On the second day most people will be starting to link turns on the bunny hill. Then maybe take a third lesson on the fifth day.

I would probably go for group lessons at first. The slower pace, and hearing feedback to others will be appreciated.

If you are a hot shot skateboarder, surfer, or expert skier, plan on a much accelerated learning curve.

Both girls are physically fit (you'd hope so!) and my daughter has skied every year since 4 years old. Her friend had skate boarded a fair bit, so both had a good start.

We took them to the dry slope to learn the very basics which was a help.
They didn't have group lessons as no schools could accommodate them the week we went - although that was our preference as we hoped they would meet other kids.

They had 2 hours per day for 3 days. They were not taken on a chair lift to start with either and there's no carpet in Samoens, so it was straight (and off!) the drag lifts.
