Any recommendations for good value hotel en route to Meribel please?

We'll be driving down from Calais and need somewhere to stay on the Saturday night - an hour or so from Meribel would be ideal - perhaps around Chambery?

Any recommendations? Would prefer a proper French family hotel rather than something like a Formule 1 - last year the one we stayed was rather grim and stank of cigarette smoke.

There's four of us and we could share a room.
