Good lateral thinking. Depends where you are flying from. Most places have flights to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and Edinburgh would offer quicker, and more straightforward access to Glenshee. The AA route planner indicates a 2 hour drive, 76 miles. Glasgow Airport an extra 40 min.
The Lecht would be further when coming from the south.

Son has gone off to Aberdeen university, if I go for a visit in the new year is it possible to get to a ski resort by public transport from the city? which is the nearest resort and what month would be best?

This will be difficult. The 502 & 503 both run to Glenshee, but are summer only. The only winter service I could find would be to Braemar, and you might get a local bus up to Glenshee. If your son skis he will get to join the Uni ski club. Car hire would be the most convenient. The road closes at Braemar on a regular basis.

Hi Dave, a client of mine told me it would be better to fly to glasgow and hire a car than to fly to Aberdeen? Just in case there was a dump in the glens ....

Difficult to get to by public transport, but if you can hire a car, Glenshee and the Lecht are both within a reasonably short drive.
The Lecht would be closer, but is a much smaller area. Glenshee would be your best bet and is probably about 2 hours drive at most. On good days, it is great.
Conditions can change quite quickly though so you may only be able to tell how good the snow is going to be a day or two beforehand. Keep an eye on the snow forecast on this site, as well as ski scotland and winter highland (the latter is updated very regularly)

The Lecht is also not worth that further distance coming from the south, or in fact worth it at all*
Think of it as an out-door Xscape really..

Dave Mac you are of course correct, this came across my mind when I replied the first time; but personally I wouldn't use my time getting to The Lecht :) I'd much rather aim for Glenshee at least- but each to their own!
Regardless, you can ski at The Lecht and enjoy it whatever you make of it :)
