hello guys
as the skiing season is approaching we are planing our visit to Switzerland. we would love to go to Zermatt for skiing this year. the problem is that we are living in Cyprus and is really difficult to get there. can you suggest the best way to travel to Zermatt? here are our options regarding the airports
Zurich (aprox 12 our indirect flight eur200) we would avoid this
Geneva (13 hour indirect flight eur200)we would avoid this
Milan Malpensa (3 hour direct flight eur 360) preferred option.

my question is what is the best option to get from milan malpensa airport to zermatt. how much would the train (how many train changes), taxi, bus or whatever cost and how long does it take?
in addition, does the benefit of direct flight outweighs the hassle of getting from Milan to Zermat with regards of time and cost? i mean maybe is better to spend 13 hours in airplanes and airports and then have a more relaxing train ride from Geneva or Zurich

can you suggest any alternative options maybe or alternative resorts of the same size and value? i have been to grand massif so i would rather avoid that and we really want to go to Zermatt as we heard its great. thank you in advance guys

If you are set on Malpensa it is a bus from the airport to Milan central train station, and then the train via Brig to Zermatt.
Have a look through the My Switzerland site for further information.

thank you for quick reply
i tried to use the website you mentioned but the online timetable is only available for up to 11/12/2010. is it safe to assume that the fares and the times will remain the same in January?

thanks once again

You will have to wait for the winter timetables to come out

Hi AKO. Welcome to J2ski. The Euro train timetables roll forwards, rather than having a specific winter/summer programme. You can usually get an idea of the available serrvices, by looking up the same travel days as late as the available timetable will show. It is an extensive journey, between 4.5 &6 hrs, depending on the train. You also really need to ascertain that the Simplon Tunnel stays open on a regular basis.

Swiss Rail (SBB) have announced they will raise prices at the start of December.

Edit: Average price rise will be over 5%

As an example, Milan to Zermatt Friday 3rd December.

Leave Milan Central - 12.25
Arrive Zermatt - 16.14

Total trip = 3 hours 49 mins, 1 change in Brig as Wickers mentioned.

No brainer IMO. It takes just as long from Geneva or Zurich. Given they are connections for you, Milan stands out a mile, even have a night or two there for a different aspect on your holiday. Unfortunately Zermatt is not so flight friendly unless you are lucky enough to be served by the few flights into Sion in the winter.
