If you don't want a big resort then we love Les Houches in the Chamonix Valley - and you've got the other 4 valley ski stations nearby too. Plenty of self catering accommodation - we've had several DIY holidays there for well under £1000 for 2 of us including spending money.

Also really loved Les Gets last year.

I have not skied much of France, mainly for exactly the reasons you just posted, but I am heading back to Serre Chevalier in March for a 2nd trip in 12 months as the skiing there is excellent (250km) and not crowded in low season at all (we go 1st week in March) and food and drink were priced as reasonably as I have found in France. I would recommend taking a look.

You called .......... Top tip look for some where the TO's do not go,we get a few english voices in LGb but mainly Brits who ship for the day from La Clusaz, pretty much a traditional French village, well I
like it 8)

Can I throw in St Martin de Belleville in which I am sitting right now :D Traditional village with access to the pistes of 3V. Not too expensive in the restaurants. We tend to eat at Chalet des Neiges slopeside to Les Allemands in Les Menuires (after skiing to Courchevel or VT in the morning)and have not paid more than 17 Euros each for lunch and drinks. Self catering apartment at night with Sky!! We stay in, eat some nice Raclette from the local deli, have some wine and watch telly!! Many of the French here do the same. There are some other Brits but not like in Meribel.

Thanks all, that certainly got a good response - its a bit like the Marmite question!

I think Le Grand B, Clusaz and Serre Chevalier sound worth a look. Plenty of boxed pressed and buttons ticked! I forgot to mention that we have to go in school hols so anywhere that gets too crowded is to be avoided.

In the meantime, we're off to Wengen on Saturday - can't wait.
