Just thought Id share lol.

I have a sony F717 which I really loved, although when I purchased I naively thought it was an SLR! however it took some fantastic photos and I had it for about 4 years.

I upgraded last year to a SLR Canon 450D or rebelXI I think its called in the US. The only thing is though, when I am skiing I am terrified of falling over and breaking it.

Another drawback is also say if I am on the slopes and I want hubby or nephew to take an action photo of me, I had to ask them to ski down with my beloved expensive camera (I have 2 lenses for it - the 18-55 and 55-200 IS) in case they fall over with it. So for me it is not really practical in terms of skiing, so I tended to use my camera phone (LG viewty) which has a 5mp camera (alegedly!) but its not the best! not when you have £750 worth of camera kit in the apartment and you are taking photos with your mobile! lol but never mind, I still like it, but still getting used to it.

I am finding it hard to move from a P&S to a SLR and still tend to shoot on auto with the odd photo being taken on other settings. I keep threatening to join a photo club and one of these days I will lol!.

I took a few photos of the snow falling which I was quite pleased with but say for example the girl in her bikini in the snow, I just grabbed my camera and a few of the photos were blurred. My point and shoot would probably have made a better job. I just dont think I am quick enough of immediatly knowing what settings I need to use.

Here are some photos I took this year in Niederau. At the right hand side you can see what I have taken them with either LG electronics (mobile) or Canon

I like the snowy evening one ..that's why I didn't buy an SLR...why don't they make them smaller (like the old Canon 110 I really loved mine)

Yes. Got one of these earlier this year; it takes great snaps on auto (straight out of the pocket), and copes very well with tricky lighting conditions... but it's a right pain to use the LCD in bright light so I probably will swap it for something with a viewfinder for next season.

just a thought Mr Admin why not a picture section...skiing and photography seem to go together..and if everyone used flikr or the like it wouldn't take much bandwidth if that would be a problem

I've got a Sony Sony CyberShot W170 (compact) point n shoot with the Carl Zeiss lens.
Absolutely fantastic! excellent quality pics, very good in "ISO" mode for nighttime shots and a very good video function.

If you're after a camera to stick in your pocket but all-singing all-dancing I'd recommend it.

I have found that although it's possible to get by without a view finder for photos, trying to watch the lcd screen when taking videos is extremely difficult. The first time I tried videoing someone skiing, I thought there must be something wrong with me. I struggled to keep them in the frame. It gets better with practice, but is much easier with a view finder as the camera can be held steady against your forehead.
I think if you are young and can focus three inches in front of your eyes, it is possible to do this watching the lcd. I can just about do this but the image is a blur.

That's getting pretty rare now, it's very frustrating really. The Ricoh Gx200 with the optional viewfinder looks very interesting though.
