Lisa, a quick google, got me this from the Snowrental website...

The SX 7 has been revamped for 2008 with the PowerPuls system. A favourite with the sporty intermediate for many a year the SX 7 is once again a lively and exciting ski for its price point that is great fun and exhilirating for a ski of this level. Even expert skiers, although you will find it quite soft, are surprised by the agility, carve and poise of what is essentially an intermediate ski. If you are looking for your first pair of skis and want something with a little get up and go then the SX7’‘s are fantastic.
Light, grippy, easy to use and a sporty intermediates dream ski

Does that read like you?

Personally, I'd try and step up to a better level of ski as soon as you can, as you will get better quality equipment and newer ranges normally.
Its more important to get a ski thats right for you, in terms of length, weight, cut/shape (ie carving ski, all mountain, off piste, etc) and speed to be honest.

This is an interesting question and something I have wondered myself. Acknowledging all of the posts stating that it depends what skiing you're doing, ability etc. are there any problems (e.g. lack of control, going too fast) which means the basic skis are better for you until you improve?
Or is it just that, generally, paying for better skis is a waste of time if you're still doing the basics?

Does that make sense........?
Bon. Allez!

Kevin, using a forgiving ski will help you to master the basic skills. IOW, if you mess up, they won't bite yer bum.

Once you have the basics, a soft, beginners ski can hold back your development, as it won't be responsive enough, or give you enough feedback as to what is happening under your bindings. As you get going faster, a soft beginners ski may become unstable as well.

Add into the mix, personal factors like, weight/height/aggressiveness, and getting the "right" ski can take a while!

Thanks Bandit - just what I needed to hear. I'm not a fan of carrying shoddy skis round so next time I shall be bursting into the shop and demanding 'the finest skis known to man'. Except 'she' wants to give snowboarding a shot next time before deciding which one to stick with but that's another matter.
Bon. Allez!

That is good advice but I'll humour her this time on the grounds that

1) I had 1 morning snowboarding lesson when I was skiing with the school and hated it so much I give up after half an hour.
2) Based on the above and the fact that she gives up most things very soon it should be an easy way to shut her up on the matter quickly.
3) I'm sure I'll be in the shop by lunchtime swapping the board for skis.
4) Despite 1)it will be something else I'm better than her at.

Hm.......But what if I'm wrong?!
Bon. Allez!
