I think hubby will be doing most of the driving as he "doesnt like the way I drive" unless he has had a drink (as alcohol doesnt really interest me) in which case I am allowed to drive!! Hubby has driven in France before. It was ok most places except the arc de triumph!!

The main things I wanted to know were

Is it compulsory for the kids to have booster seats?
Are the speed limits the same or are they properly signed what speed you can go? (we are taking our own car btw)
What about signage? I know on the programme I watched they went round a ferry load of people with different road signs and noone had a clue what they were (including me!)
How do I find out what I need to cover the headlights or what I need in the boot. I remember reading a while back saying I needed a high vis jacket and triangle and something else but I cant remember. with regard to the high vis jacket, do I need to have 1 for each passenger?

Karen

Hi Karen, you will need a set of beam benders cost around £6, The high vis jacket is for the driver only £3, you also will need the reflective triangle Price not sure I have had mine years. Don't panic most of it is common sense

Beam benders - depends what car you have. Try Halfords or failing that your local car dealer for your car.
Not sure of the exact speed limits, but if it's like here then in town the limit is 50kmh and A roads (not motorway) it's 80kmh.
Autobahns (or at least most of the ones I've driven on) tend to be only 2 lanes - so worth staying in the inside lane and using the outside just for overtaking.

I think I saw that program or something similar, I think most years there's a campaign to try and make people a bit more aware and a bit more considerate when they cross the channel, obviously it's having mixed success

It wouldn't hurt if someone stood at the tunnel/ferry exit handing out a booklet with relevant rules and information though. Penalties are getting stiffer and likely to get even stiffer, there was some fuss here when the number of non-Swiss cars breaking various laws was released and I think that's fair, it's a particular frustration driving at peak times to make allowances for people ignoring various laws. That's not to say that in some areas of Switzerland the locals manage some pretty appalling driving

Tony_H wrote:Its actually nicer driving abroad than it is over here, you'll be fine.

Oh right, that explains all the rubbish driving and aggression on UK roads then... it's all the foreigners!

Relying on "common sense" or "being a good driver" is daft and will plainly put you on the wrong side of the law if you apply your UK driving approach on the continent.

Karen - the AA has what looks like a pretty comprehensive coverage of European Driving Requirements, by country here :-
http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/countrybycountry.html

They also have a handy list of Equipment required and recommended.

Hopefully we all know about the hi-vis jacket required in France now (on the spot fine), but did you know a First Aid Kit is compulsory in Austria (though not, surprisingly, in France or Germany apparently)?
