That must be a real 'bummer'. Probably wouldn't stop a determined thief, but I've got one of these:

Handy money too .

i've been looking at all your ideas for security and will probably do the lot. the qr code, the ski shop sticker, the lock. we did take the winter sports package out but one of the clauses is that'you must excercise reasonable supervision for the safety of your property'does that include sitting outside but not seeing who took it? will have to be careful with the wordin on that one.also that you need a written police report which he has got(albeit in french) thank you so much for all your advice and wish me luck with the insurance

It's always a worry, especially when your stuff is brand new. After a couple of uses or seasons, ski's/snowboards are not so attactive to thieves.

I was completely paranoid the first time I used my new skis but now I know they are not the latest thing, I worry less. I do have a lock but rarely use it (it will serve me right if I do lose them). Sometimes we mix the ski's up a bit so they are not in pairs but this option is not available to boarders!

My OH lost his brand new ski's after just 2 days using them, he now says he will only rent in future. It's such a shame the honest majority have their fun ruined by a few scumbags.
I can see my house from here...

Probably cheaper to book a holiday to Bulgaria and steal it back as that's where it likely to end up. Big gangs of thieves across mega resorts in France stealing skis and boards and using them as rentals in Eastern Europe, it was reported a couple of seasons ago I believe on various websites.

I bought a lock and then never bother taking I as it weighs a fair bit to cart about with me.

I found Bulgaria the cheapest place to buy new ski gear, even cheaper than Andorra so I'm surprised some would nick second hand gear to take it there, unless its for the hire shop opposite the Rila hotel.
