Or am I just unfit?!

Iceman,
The soles of my feet were aching a bit as well, after ski-ing in the Three Valleys recently. Like you, I was a bit confused about this. As you probably know (because I wrote that whole piece about it on here) I had my boots fitted with special insoles and I've been ski-ing in these boots during several ski holidays since without any problems. So I was quite sure that there was nothing wrong with my boots.

After thinking about it I came to the conclusion that it was the unusual piste conditions that was causing my problem. I don't know what Val Thorens is like at the moment, but a couple of weeks ago in Meribel there was masses of powder everywhere and the pistes were all either deep powder or ploughed up into an unsightly mogully mess. Our ski instructor told us to 'bounce' (my expresssion) our turns to cope with this mess by pushing down on our skis before the turn so that the skis would rebound up for us to pivot them clear of the powder. Now it seemed very likely to me that it was all that pushing (which I don't normally have to do to that extent) which was making the soles of my feet sore.

Anyway, after a few days the soles of my feet seemed to adjust to their new pushing task and they stopped hurting.

I think going to see a boot fitter if you have any doubt about your boots is a good idea, but I'm just tentatively suggesting that the cause may be the condition of the pistes, if they are still as bad as they were when we were there a couple of weeks ago.

I hope your feet feel better soon and you have a great time. I wish I was back out there now, sore feet or not :cry:

You might want to see a bootfitter for this problem. Some people have "collapsing arches" and will need a support to stop their feet cramping. You also shouldn't buckle your boots too tight, particularly in the morning. Generally, if you really need to buckle them up often means that boots are too big for you. Definitely have your boots checked. Pain in quads can result from being pushed into backseat and it can be also related to boots.

Ice ...
I have had your exact problem which arised after some hard skiing.
My old boots had a screw under the arch that pushed a plate inwards under the liner thus padding out the arch. Bit of a hit or miss - too much/too little but problem solved in a day or so.

I suffer from the same aching arches problem on day 1 every year...I have custom soles in my boots.

My theory is my boots are shaped to support my feet, but because I've walked around for 51 weeks a year in shoes that are flat...my feet just aren't used to be supported properly.

Therefore ski boots = well fitting;
All other shoes = bad fitting;
Conclusion = I should ski more regularly;
Result = I've just returned from L2A and will go to 3V in seven weeks time. Just for 'research' purposes you understand. )
if I'm not skiing then I'm kayaking.

Well, update. This morning put on boots. It is the left that was causing issues, again this'd mornin bad. That was it, they were in the bin and visa was coming out!!

Did not do them up as tight, relaxed my skiing style, started off with a black as first run and everything was fine!

Snow was hard work on Sunday, packed down a bit today. Apart from an easy blue that runs to the bottom. Moguled bad by the end if the day

All in all, a great day painless feet, 6€ for guiness and 12€ for bowl onion soup....guiness for lunch rest of the week I think!!
