Ian,
The Tom Tom does help, so I'm not taking it back. I'm just trying to say that you can't completely rely on it, especially when you reach your destination post code, because it just dumps you. On our road, for example, the same post code covers 3/4 of a mile.

I havne't booked a car yet but was planning to use these guys http://www.vizivo.com/ Non of the quotes Ive got include winter tyres which are compulsory if you hire in Switzerland which adds about £5 a day. Where are you staying?

Craiggggg5 and Neiltoo,
I'm glad my report on the Tignes trip encouraged you to book a holiday there. It was very good value for money. I hope you both have a great time.
We're planning to go back there next October.

I hope the J2ski members out there now also report back. It will be interesting to hear how much the conditions have changed in just one week, since the snow fell at Tignes.

Ally, with the greatest respect, there is a difference between someone who has driven for 30 years, a good driver, and an experienced driver. My mum has been driving over 30 years but I would not call her a good driver, or an experienced one as she pootles around town most of the time, apart from the odd long trip where I have to print off maps and offer all sorts of advice. I invariably get a call to tell me the route i gave her was wrong and that she ended up somewhere else.

Tom Tom I find is only useful for finding alternative routes when traffic is bad or the road is blocked, or sometimes for finding a certain way into a city centre I dont know very well. I never understand why people have them on when on a motorway, its a straight line!

Anyway, sounds like you had quite an adventure. My tip for using a sat nav would be to make sure you use your own common sense as well and dont rely totally on it getting you to where you want to go or actually believe it is always going to be right. I know what you mean about alleged junctions, sometimes its a bend and you keep on the same road.

I find as long as you get the right postcode and input it, you wont go far wrong. Maybe the addresses you were putting in werent 100% right, or your preferences were not set to using major roads or the most direct route, all of which you cna change.
Good luck!
