Hi All,

So this will be my 3rd ski holiday coming up. Two years ago I bought my own boots.

I have read many forums talking about BOOTS being too big.

So decided to go back to my local ski-shop and get them to check my boots.

According to them the boots that were sold to me were 28.5 (as noted on the boots - there are two numbers on the bottom 280/285).

But my feet - when placed on their sizing template should only be 27.

So question....... for a ski-er of my ability (I can carve comfortably and have just started some red runs).... will buying new boots - at the recommended 27 - make a noticeable diffference to my ski'ing?

Bearing in mind - I do already notice a small amount of movement of my feet in my current boots (now that the guy told me I should be having none .... but is that just psychological?)

Please let me know what you all think.

Classic mistake for first time boot purchase, and yes - I did it too.
You MUST buy boots that are the right size and that are comfortable. Many people swear by having a proper fitting with someone like CEM, especially if you have unusual shaped feet. But you can buy from a ski shop as long as they have the right knowledge on hand!
The size of the shell is important, do the shell test where you take the lining out, and ask the shop to do this to make sure its right. You can buy boots with custom linings and custom shells these days too.
Dont set yourself a budget, just go with whats right in your size and feels comfortable, and is right for your ability. For what you say, I'd recommend something around 80/90 flex so they are not too stiff but will also help you develop onto reds, blacks and maybe even other parts of the mountain too.

Simple things to remember:
When you first try the boots on, it is likely the ones that fit feel too tight on your toes. Remember its important to stand up, lean into the tongues, and bend the knees slightly, and then the toes are pulled away from the front to get the perfect feel for when skiing. The linings will give over time, so you need to have a close fit to start with. Unfortunately it might mean a few days of discomfort and getting used to when you first wear them, but you will notice much more control and a feeling of being more in touch with your skis.

Dont buy based on the colour, or the manufacturer, have an open mind and go with what is the best for you.

Dont always buy from the first shop just because its all they have in. Try a few places until you are 100% satisfied with the fit and advice given.
My last boots were Atomic, too big but comfortable to begin with, and I wrongly assumed I'd have Atomic boots again and ended up with Salomon's.

Best of luck.

Having said dont buy on the colour, you may find the boots you select are available in a couple of different colour ways, often black or white.

Tony is giving you wise advice.
The boots are more important that skis, than jacket or underwear!
They are the "interface" between you and skis!

Too large or big boots causes "play" within very much like driving a cat with poor steering linkage!
Accidents will happen!

Please do not accept comment, "you will break them in while on slope"!
Read all about this on this site. There are many great comments!

Happy skiing.

For most people, that would mean you need a 26cm shell. For some a 27cm shell would work, and some could even squeeze into a 25cm shell comfortably with the right footbed. Remember to wear thin socks at first.
