I have just returned from Sauze d'Oulx and used the chairlift from the top of Sauze to the Gondola station to Sestriere and it occurred to me that the 'lift' is probably unique in that -
a) it is a single seater lift
b) it is used in both directions
Are there any other 'quaint' or favourite lifts around

You were lucky it was open - it often isnt!
I used it in 2007 to get across to Sestriere, and it was about minus 17 and coming the other way were a group of men wearing nothing on their lower halves but kilts!
As for other chairs, I have not come across another 1 man chair anywhere else, but if quaint means slow, then Serre Che has to be the quaintest resort in the world! They have some of the old 3 man Poma chair lifts which dont have a "station" as such, just the old traditional wheel at the end where the chair turns 180 degrees, and of course there is no system to slow the chairs down. Despite knowing this and preparing for it when the chair turns and comes hurtling at you, it never ceased to amaze me how many times I got caught out as it took me out at knee height, dumped me half on the seat and continued at the same pace (which actually is damned slow once you get up above the ground) for what seemed like half an hour each lift!
There is also an old 2 man chair from the bottom of the Ebbenwald red on Ahorn Mountain in Mayrhofen. The run down is fantastic and worth the long slow chair back up. Skidaddle's avatar is a pic of him asleep on that chair!
I cant wait to take STEWART DOWLING on this chair next Jan.

While perhaps not actually meeting the term "quaint", the "scare chair" in Aple D'heuz is pretty interesting. Instead of bringing you up, the chair drops over the edge of a cliff and drops down about 500m before climbing up the other side of the valley. Its a pretty unusual experience and not for anybody with any fear of heights

There used to be a single metal seated chair coming up from Trepalle to Mottolino in Livigno, bloody cold on your bottom, it has since been replaced
