Try before you buy! As a "progressing intermediate" you need to be looking for a capable ski that's going to allow you to progress. TBH I'd recommend hiring - and taking the opportunity to try out different models and types of ski, talking to the technicians in the hire shop, etc. - until you really know what you want / need.
What a question...
But, yes, it matters hugely - modern skis have such varying width and flex characteristics that it's not possible to decide what length is right until you know the ski you'll be buying.
In general, the fatter the ski, the shorter the length you need, but there are plenty of exceptions with some modern fatties that folk seem to like to ski long (for some reason my mind has a picture of Ross with an Aircraft Carrier strapped to each foot... but I digress...).
...next time you're out, book a hire package that lets you change the skis and work your way through their stock... 8) ...talk to the guys in the shop, tell them how and what you ski and see what they recommend.

I would suggest you need to go a little longer (150-something). Depends if you want to get in to skiing a bit more off piste//powder etc.
(I have a cracking photo from today, pillow line and the skis look HUGE!)

I am Scottish... and an instructor.. how does 'BEND YER KNEES' sound? Not so much?
You should definitely try some different skis, though, are you near a snowdome?
