:D :D :D :D

Ever had one of those ski days, when you can't stop smiling?

Val d'Isere, Saturday, last afternoon of skiing, forecast was for cloud/snow all day, with many pistes closed and 5 out of 5 on the avalanche scale. Resolved to packing our stuff away and reading a book. Then the sun came out. Powder snow, on piste and off piste, bright sun-shine. Barely another soul around, not a lift queue in sight. Spent the afternoon giggling to myself. Happy days. :D :D :D

I was there too. Know exactly what you mean. Skiied on the Bellevarde side and had a fantastic time.

Smiled all afternoon. Great way to end the week. :D :D

Can you just clarify that you went off piste when the avalanche warning was 5/5?

Perhaps there was a good reason for few folks on the hill?

The death toll in the Northern Alps was pretty high last weekend.Pistehors has the details.

As soon as I posted I thought someone would bring that up.

Well and truely dampened my enthusiasm.

My post did not say I went off piste, and I can clarify that I stayed on the piste. What's more, I detest those that put their lives at risk and more importantly the lives of those sent to rescue them when conditions dictate no risks to be taken.

So few people on the hill because 1) It's January, 2) It was Changeover day 3)Conditions changed very quickly.

Having posted a cheery, feel good story, I'm now pretty p*ss*d that it could be suggested I'm an irresponsible tw*t.

You should not let this get you down - your original post was at least ambiguous about whether you went off-piste or not. It's not that surprising that some people would pick it up that way and clearly you agree that anyobdy going off piste in those conditions would have been irresponsible. Nobody is picking on you - they are just trying to advocate good practice on the mountains.

Look to the positive - you had a great day (on piste) and the critical importance of respecting the avalanche warnings has been underlined by the thread. Be happy.
