I`m heading out to Vallandry this weekend, and am trying to find the best routefrom Geneva. i`m pretty sure that the motorway will be longer in distance, but shorter in time due to the ease and speed of the motorway compared to the mountain roads. Does anyone have ay experirnce of this route, or any recomendations of which roads to take?

Also, we will be looking for hotel somewhere in between. We fly into Geneva on Friday, but can`t get into the chalet until Saturday ( done this so we can get into resort on Saturday morning, and get an extra days skiing :D and miss the rush up the mountain roads on saturday afternoon!) Does anyone know whether there are any hotels on or very close to the motorways/roads i`ll be using, within about an hour ish of Geneva?

Any help appriciated.

Cheers guys, Rob

:DHi,

Below is a copy of directions i posted on another travel forum for someone else, but they are more or less the same, except once through Moutiers (you will see a sign for vallandry from memory) and going up the valley towards Bourg-Saint-Maurice you will come to a sign for AIME ,this is the road you will turn off the N90 and takes you through AIME and onto Vallandry ,Peisey-Vallandry.With regards to a hotel along the way i think there is a Travelodge of some sorts between Albertville and Moutiers (but i could be wrong, sorry i cannot be more help on this part).

Hi again,

Each time i have driven from Geneva i have always had the car for the whole duration of my holiday and then dropped the car back at Geneva, the company i mentioned (Autoeurope) used Europcar from Geneva and there is a Europcar office in Bourg-St-Maurice located at the crossroads on the main road through BsM opposite the cinema just down from the petrol station.

The drive from Geneva is fairly straightforward once you have negotiated the main part of the city, from the car hire (these directions are from the french side) you come out of the car hire section onto the main road and turn right, emediately there is a border check to drive through, once through there you go through the tunnel under the runway to a crossroads, go stright over this and onto a small round about, go over this onto the Route de Ferney and follow this road all the way to a crossroads (about 1 1/2 miles or so) go over this crossroad and the road takes you down via the side of the lake.

At the other end there is a bridge stay in the middle and at the other end carry on the same road (do not take the left fork,or the right)from here you want to keep in the right hand lane (next to the kirb) and carry on this road until you see a Toyota car delership on the left hand side of the road, when you see this take the turning directly opposite into the Avenue du Thonex,at the end of the road you will see a sign for the french motorway, after a little while (this is on the A411) you wil pass another checkpoint and then you just follow the signs for Annecy via the A411 - A40 then turn off onto the A41 to Annecy.

Once nearing Annecy you will need to follow the sighns for Annecy Sud (Annecy south) this will then take you through Annecy all you need to do is follow the green signs for Albertville.Once out of Annecy and after having driven down the side of the lake ,you carry on folowing the signs for Albertville, once at Albertville you just stay on the main road going through (you know you are on the right road as it is a dead straight road with several sets of traffic lights,at the other end of Albertville you will come to a round about ,you will need to take the fourth exit frommemory and head towards Moutiers on the N90.

Once nearing Moutiers Bourg-Saint-Maurice starts to be signposted (white signs with black lettering) along with Les arcs etc from here it is just a trip up the Valley on a normal road with one lane in each direction for most of it with a few tunnels thrown in,from Moutiers BsM is about 29 km away, the whole trip should take around 2 1/2 hours in good traffic and weather.

You can also save a little time by avoiding Annecy by staying on the motorway ( A41) and joining up with the A43 and nto BsM via Chambery - Albertville - Moutiers and onto BsM.

I hope these directions are making sense and i have not waffled, if you are not going for a while send me you're full postal address via the message facility on this site (or via my website at www.ski-bourgstmaurice-lesarcs.co.uk ) and i will post you a full route map, or if you send me you're email address i can send you a Google earth route map also.

One final point on returning to Geneva airport the thing people find the worst is that once near Geneva if you miss the right exit for the city you end up driving down a 3 mile stretch of Swiss motorway and get stung for a 30euro payment (vignette),to avoid this once on the A40 near Geneva you will stat to see signs for the Tellipherique du Saleve (think the spelling is correct) this is a cable car that spans the motorway which takes tourists up to a lookout point over Geneva ,when you start to see signs for this you will need to then keep a lookout for signs for the A411,this exit is located near a flyover on the edge of a small industrial site,by taking this exit A411 it will take you onto the road you originally came out of Geneva on,all you then do is follow you're route to the airport in reverse.

I hope this helps in some way, also the car dealership that is located on the left hand side of the road opposite the turning to get to the motorway in Geneva could well be a Nissan dealership (as soon as you see a dealership whether its a Toyota/Nissan the turning opposite to you're rught will be the one you want.

Sorry if i have rambled a bit and wish you all the best, and hope you have an enjoyable ,safe trip.

Jon.

Hi Jon,

That`s a great help, thanks! I`ll do some internet searches for hotels, but i`m sure one will come up.
