Hello

We are off to Austria tomorrow, and I just checked the weather forecast, which gave temperatures as low as minus 30 C !!!

is this correct ? is anyone there now that can comment ?

I'm putting some extra thermals in my bag !

Not sure about -30C but, yes, it does look likely to be seriously cold this weekend and again around the middle of next week.

Most of the Northern / Central Alps ski resorts will have a couple of days with maximum temperatures well below freezing; max temp of -10C to -15C will be common, and colder spots (avoid chairlifts in shadow if you can!!!) will be looking at -20C, maybe beyond.

So, yes, good base layers, warm top layers (lots), good (very good!) gloves, glove inners and hand-warmers if your hands get cold), get a buff / face protector... and plenty of stops for hot chocolate! 8)

In fact, it may even get cold enough for Ross to put a shirt on...

Just had a quick look at

http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/St-Anton/6day/top

They are quoting a temp of -47C with wind chill at the top for Saturday afternoon :!: :!: :!:

I seem to remember Pavel telling a story about how the tears in his eyes were freezing at such temperatures - brrrrrrrrrrr :x

Isn't Tony heading to St Anton on Saturday? Hope he remembers to wrap up well

-47 C ???

Well I'm just fishing out all the various clothing I've acquired over the years. . .

Plan is to wear 1 x thermal long johns, + 1 x fleece trousers under salopettes. Merino Wool socks

Thermal Vest, Merino Wool baselayer, Light fleece, Helly Hansen Quilted jacket, Fleece tube scarf thing, Double insulated Hat, Face mask and goggles

Gloves I have a pair of Snowlife gloves with seperate inners, and a pair of silk gloves to wear under these.

It's gonna be interesting ! :D

I've skied and climbed in those sort of temperatures and it's brisk for sure but your tears won't freeze, they leave your body at body temperature and have a low freezing point as they have saline in them. If they dripped onto the outside of a face-mask they' freeze certainly but that would happen at only a couple of degrees below freezing point.

Great! We're heading out to St Anton with Tony and Skiddadle on Sunday. I've been looking forward to some cold temps. I bought a 3in1 Spyder jacket last season and It's only ever been cold enough to wear the outer part of it once. Bring it on!

Freezing nostel hairs are always an odd sensation. Seemed to happen regularly in Livigno.

yes obviously you're drawing cold in through the nose and it will happen, that's in part why frostbit in the nose isn't uncommon along with limited blood flow in the area of course.
