We like to ski early in the season and after a snow panic a couple of years ago we decided Canada was the place to go. Last year we had 17 fantastic days skiing in Silver Star and Big White, powder up to our hips in places. So, this year we opted for more of the same, but we are now facing a resort with not enough snow to open and none anywhere nearby.

After deciding Europe so early in the season was risky we find it is deep in snow this year! to prevent us losing all our money for the Canadian flights accomodation etc we are hoping to get the package put back to March 09. however, we are all desperate to ski.

Part of me wants to go to Silver Star next week as planned in the hope it will snow, but the weather forcast says just a few cm over the next 9 days. would you risk it? has anyone experienced this problem in canada before? how reliable are the snow forecasts, we have even looked at the Farmers almanac for the area and it also is not promising snow!

There was a large snowfall Mon night, though I don't know about Silver Star other than It looks like they got some of it on the village webcam.

To be fair though, it's a gamble on there being a decent base by the time you get out there. You could always ask your operator if they have alternative arrangements, maybe they can switch you to Banff, which is looking in better shape. I think you were especially lucky with the early heavy snowfall at silver star last year.

Got my fingers crossed for you!

To summarise, don't panic, a storm can very easily drop 50 inches of snow (as we have seen in Loveland) in a couple of days which could change everything.

Early season is always a gamble, was in Val D'Isere 3 years ago when all there was open was one red run - Orange. Then with the Mens downhill scheduled for the following weekend that closed and they opened Dibold blue run instead. That one run was a tad busy!
We got a taxi to Tignes were there was a little more open.
