I have travelled on many, many 'single' trips over many years - and I think you are best trying Switzerland or Italy where single rooms are pretty much available at little or no supplement in an awful lot of hotels.

In France, they are almost non-existant in hotels, a few chalets have them, but this usually means the dreaded single supplement.

My preference these days is for Switzerland and I have booked through the resort websites; efficient, available in English and you get instant confirmation. Use the very efficient rail system from Zurich or Geneva to cut down on transfer costs from the airport - and have a good time!!!

Most villages in Austria have small privately run pensions. You can search on the area website. The web site for Nierau is:

http://www.wildschoenau.com/buchen/winter/en/suchen_tis.aspx?nav=tmp_1_700605169

Always check out the location. Life is a lot easier if you can ski to the door, than if you have to walk half a mile, or get a ski bus.

One advantage of smaller places, is that it can often afford an opportunity to improve language skills. The younger people can almost all speak English, but there are older pension owners, that only have a smattering of English, and like to help you learn.

Scott,

Whats the budget?

I have found recently what can appear expensive at first turns out cheaper in the long run!

I stayed at a 4 star spa hotel at Hintertux two weeks ago, in a single room (very spacious)with half board for 70 EUR a night, about 54 GBP. Now that seems a little expensive until you realize what you get for the money.

Massive buffet breakfast
4 course evening meal
Sauna, pool, spa etc
Excellent room, complimentary water and robes etc

Now you can find things much cheaper, but once you add lunch and dinner to the mix, you can quickly rack up an additional 30 EUR per day. I found I needed very little for lunch as I could take stuff from breakfast with me. It also gives you something to do when the weather is bad or lifts are closed.

The skiing on the Tux is excellent and as it is a glacier, its guaranteed. The lift pass itself gives access to the Zillertal range including Mayrhofen, the transport links are excellent and getting there can be done easily from Munich airport for about 40 EUR return.

If you like the idea, let me now and I can provide some guidance.

It would be good if the ski companys tuned into the single skier gap in the market instead of fleecing us with punitive supplements.
How popular would a multi single room building be i wonder?
