Trencher wrote:Ally, let the boots air out after use, before you put them away in a bag. If the they are really damp, pull the liners out to make sure they are thoroughly dry, and put them back in before storing them.
If you want to look really hardcore, put a piece of duct tape in front of the first buckle, to stop snow getting in

Thanks Trencher,
I'll make sure they're dry before I put them away. I don't think I've got much chance of looking 'hardcore' though, duct tape or not, because as soon as I do my first snow-plough I'll be rumbled

Ally good bone density does not mean you wont break your bones. I had scans for bone density a little while ago as they suspected I would be a major candidate for oesteoperosis. They do the scans using your back and hip joints, so your jaw is no indication of good strong bones.
My scans came back so good that I could live to be 100 and not suffer any brittle bone disease. But at the same time I have broken toes four times. The worst being my big toe where the bruising went all the way to my knee.

Rose,
Do you think toes break easily then? Do you know why you've broken your toes four times? Bruising up to your knee sounds pretty bad. Mine was just confined to my big toe.

I have asked lots of people about this, and several people have said they broke their toes by kicking a wall, for example, instead of a ball. I just can't imagine how my toe could have hit the inside of my boot so hard that it broke.

I do hope I haven't got osteoporosis. That would be awful. I don't think I have, because I have always eaten lots of dairy products and I do a great deal of weight bearing exercise (I have just been carrying heavy logs a pretty fair distance), and no-one in my family has it. Also, I had lots of other falls during my ski holiday and I didn't break anything else.

I suppose I can always get a scan for osteoporosis, like you did.

I think you need to just get on with life. You have broken your toe and it is getting better (with no apparent resulting damage), get over it.

When I broke my big toe it was a result of dropping a frozen turkey on it from a height, the bruising went to the knee as a lot of the blood vessels on top of my foot burst. But the other breaks have been from slipping down the stairs, kicking a door frame and coming off my surf board.
Apart from the first break which was painful for ages, the others just painful for a week or so. I dont even bother to have them x rayed and just wear different shoes for a while. Does'nt stop me doing any-thing.

Thanks Rose,
You do seem to have been pretty unlucky with regard to your toes - but at least they're all okay now :D

I suppose it's my Mum who wound me up about my toe. She used to be a GP and 'osteoporosis' was the first thing she said when I told her I'd broken my toe. But, as I said, I would think that apart from this fracture I'd count as low risk for osteoporosis, and I'm not quite 50 yet.

Pablo - osteoporosis is a very common condition. I've just checked the figures for it , and apparently there are 3 million people in the U.K. with it, it costs the NHS £6 million a day, there are 230,000 osteoporotic fractures each year in the U.K. and one in two women over the age of 50 will fracture a bone mainly as a result of it. It's also very difficult to diagnose without a scan and is usually only suspected after a fracture.

Anyway - back to ski boots. I am hoping my toes will be quite safe inside my new boots :D
