Hi there

We are a family of 2 adults and 3 children, mainly beginners, so we need a ski school. I have been looking at Filzmoos and Niederau but trying to find an apartment available in the Feburay half term has proved more of a pain than I thought. I contacted the tourist office and they ahve sent me through a couple for Oberau and a couple for Auffach. I just wondered if they would be any good for us and if anyone knows what there is to do or would we need to travel to other resorts?

thanks
Karen

Hi Karen,

I would`nt recommend Auffach but if you look through some of the threads on this forum you will see that Niederau has quiet a cult following among a lot of its members, Me included.
If you would like to pm jan stenmark at the Auhof he could maybe accommodate you as he has an apartment house.Hope this helps.

Thanks AJ

I have already tried the Auhof and lots of others in Niederau, they are either out of my price range (about £500 for the week) or they are fully booked. So that is why I am having to look further afield. I have been to Soll twice before so maybe going to consider that, but I really wanted to go somewhere different. So any ideas would be great. Like I said it has to be really to fit around the beginners. I have even managed to persuade hubby to go into the beginners lesson on his own so it means I can put the 2 youngest children in ski school and go off for a couple of hours with the oldest. I would be quite happy with greens and blues as oldest has only had 1 week with the school and I havent skied for 15 years or so. I am open to suggestions though. I am not bothered if the town isnt buzzing, something for the kids would be nice to do like sleigh ride or sleging, swimming pool but we could always travel to these resorts from elsewhere.

Try Seefeld austria, try the Alpina hotel they are 2 mins away from ski-school and nursery slopes. If you book through Crystal or Inghams I think kids go free at the hotel. Alpina is fantastic the food and the service is fantastic drinks are free all through dinner.

Karen,

I agree with Adele about Auffach, and while Oberau is a really interesting village, (the Kellerwirt is over a 1000 years old) it has very limited skiing. Auffach would be good when your family are up to early intermediate stage. even then, stay in Niederau, and catch the ski bus to Auffach.

Not sure if you mean your budget is £500 per week, or if that figure is out of your range.

We are heading for Niederau in just over three weeks, and have booked an old 5 bedroom, 10 person house for 90 Euros a night ~ that is the house price. The four of us will rattle. Its high season winter 07/08 price was 125Eu per night. There are a few houses dotted about Niederau like this, but they do take some finding.

On the subject of ski instruction, the red school in Niederau is very friendly and well organised. I would put each member of your family in their own appropriate group, but explain both to your own instructor, and to the childrens instructor(s) that you are "together" and that you want to meet at lunchtime and after ski school.

The youngest one will be in kindergarten. This is a terrific way for to have fun on skis, and the 7 year old may also be there, or in a childrens ski class. Your OH can go into a beginners class. You will be capability-tested during the first half hour(one or two runs down a gentle slope), and put in a similar standard group.

There will be heaps of mums and dads with kids in classes, and the red school is very well organised on this. No child is ever left on their own.

thanks that is reassuring about the ski school. my kids are 8, 10 and 13, but it is only the two younger ones going in ski school. i haev persuaded hubby to let me and oldest child off the leash whilst they are in ski school.

I emailed the tourist offfice of niederau and with a bit of help from the good people on these forums I am waiting for some hotels to come back to me. so fingers crossed I can get in for the school hol week. just need a price for an easyjet flight from manchester or edinburgh to salz, munich or inns. any ideas at peak time?

Karen, a senior moment on my part, I had the ages of your young ones as 4,7,13. At 8 and 10, they would both go to childrens beginners class. It is still planed by the ski school to be good fun.
