I would be very grateful if any one of you could offer any advice as to which ski rental shop central Chamonix offers a friendly, professional, helpful ski hire service to an English speaker (with limited French) who'd like to book ski's online at reasonable rate for New Year and who be open to change skis over for different models during the week.

Does anybody have any suggestions

I'd also love to hear of any bad experiences so that I can tell everyone I know to avoid certain bad hire shops

Many thanks

Silver

Hi Silver,

We (j2ski) are partnered with SkiSet, who can arrange ski hire in several shops in Chamonix and Argentiere (whichever suits you best). We wouldn't work with them if they didn't provide, as a rule, the level of service you're looking for.

They will almost certainly be able to change your skis mid-week for you, the only possible restriction might be that it will be a busy week - so some of the models you want may be unavailable at times.

You can pre-book ski hire (via this link), for a discount of at least 20% off the walk-in price, at any of these locations :-

* L'Aiguille du Midi Pro Shop
* SkiSet Chamonix Sud
* SkiSet Ginabelle
* Hotels Mercure (Centre and Bossons)
* Grand Montets

Being Chamonix, you can be pretty sure there will be some English-speakers in the shops.

Hope that helps,
The Admin Man

Ok so I eventually answered my own question. I must say that J2ski's discount from Ski set is available to all anyway and the shop I eventually rented from's starting prices were cheaper than the afore-mentioned discounted prices
I eventually sourched a considerably cheaper place in Chamonix to Ski set Intersport and the rest of the big boys December 2007-Jan 2008.
A place where you weren't charged for changing skis mid week (as long as they were available and in the same price bracket)
The other bonus was that I recieved a 15% discount for booking online without being charged a penny until the day I returned my skis last Saturday.
Not only that, but I also specify which specific ski I wanted up front without having to settle for "or similar"
If you're in Chamonix I highly recommend proskimontagne.
As well as excellent service, I saved 30 Euros for 8 days hire compared to the rest
