Hey Watterski, glad you decided to go :)
I don't know anything about ski hosting but I assume its similar to joining a ski school. I'm going to Niederau on my own, I will turn up and they will put in a beginners adult group - all I need to start with really. I might go with private lessons later on if I'm doing well (or very badly). The same options should be possible at most resorts.

I thought ski hosting was always included in the price of the holiday?
The Ski Club of Great Britain do ski hosting, in the main ski resorts, but I think it's for a maximum of 3 days and you do have to pay to become a member (unless you're doing one day as a trial to see if you want to become a member). However, once you've paid your membership you can get discounts off the price of your holiday with certain tour operators, and discounts in shops etc. which can actually make up for the membership money.
I've been with them, and they do easy days as well as hard days.

And as Old Andy said at the beginning of this thread, there are some hotels that have single rooms, so you wouldn't have to pay the huge single supplement the tour operators charge otherwise.

The "hosting" is almost always free, to save conflict with the local ski schools. For that reason the "hosts" won't be teaching you; they're just showing a group of guests round the mountain (a good way to meet people).

It has become an issue in France and has been stopped by a lot of operators there; as a result of the ESF suing LeSki recently!

Mark Warner include hosting in most of their resorts outside France and, as I said, you'll often find that the independently-run chalets will have something similar (often as an opportunity for the staff to get more skiing in... ).

The only issue with late bookings is that the flight prices go up, assuming you are booking with a budget airline.

I am seriously considering going back to Morzine mid march. I only skied the Morzine/les gets area so there is plenty more on the Avoriaz side to play with.

Skied: Arinsal, La Plagne, Alpe D'huez, Flaine, Les Arcs, Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz, Sauze, Courchevel, Val Thorens

Seriously. Just go in a full weeks worth of lessons and forget the private lessons, as not only will they cost a fortune but you really need to learn the full basics and enjoy some company in a group.

Ski hosting, as has been said, it a way of showing competent skiers around the area. Ski Miquel are one company who do a lot of it, and other tour ops will offer it in some places but as Ian said you'll need to be a red slope skier to benefit or keep up.

Thanks for the info. I was relieved to find that the old bones were still in working order when I went at new year. I have skied for about 10 weeks before. Used to get roughly 3 weeks every year :-) so red slopes not a problem. Had a go at carving ..... With some success but as the conditions were far from ideal quite pleased with my efforts. Thinking about Italy on a package as I am aware as Snapzzz pointed out budget airline tickets get more pricey....will wait to se what he travel agent digs out.
