My old salomon equipe socks have finally had it. I have been looking for some new ones, I can see that some are looking the part but not actually doing what they should, as in the varying weave direction in specific parts of the sock is just a different colour and not actually an effective weave..if that makes sense?

I just wondered if you find paying £15 or more for a pair of socks worth it?

A good tech sock that keeps your feet dry?

Yes, well worth it!
Always follow the 20cm rule!

Personally, I like Smartwool Merino ski socks; thin, comfy and warm.
They seem to last well too, I have skied 5 seasons on the oldest ones and they are still working well.
The only thing I would stay away from is anything made of cotton; in my experience they make your feet wet and cold.

One pair of old socks sounds minging!

Always buy the best socks you can afford, 35 euro seems to be about the going rate for them these days. Personally I prefer something not too thick, and make sure you get correct size (smaller is better if you are between). Unless the boot liner or sock itself is wet thin socks are good enough for all but coldest days.

Falke website has them on sale at £15.50, I wear the sk2, excellent socks. These are not too thick and with merino, happy days.

Ditto - used Falke for the last few years. I have about 4 pairs and all great, I prefer the slightly thinner ones but that's just the way they fit with my boot etc.

I think you would be safe to wash them now, Chat....

I tried Merino socks, and found them wanting, too thin, so you can feel every inner boot nuance, and not warm enough. However, I accept they worked for you. (I wear everything else in merino).

Nor do I believe that high price is a guide to quality, and that applies to all walks of life.

TK max Nordica seem to do Ok, and have lasted 35/37 weeks. (So far) About £5 a pair. I take two pairs, and wash one pair every night.
I have also, just for pure devilment, worn Matalan short day socks, then priced at 4 pairs for £5. I noticed little difference from ski socks.

Despite the above harsh critique of Smartwool socks above (!), Sports Pursuit has them in their sale at the moment for £11.99.
