Along with Silksworth, there might even be an indoor artificial slope built in Sunderland next year next to the swimming pool. Fingers crossed - currently undergoing public consultation.
Bon. Allez!

Well, i have been and done it.

I first went to a field behind my house with a very slight slope.
The snow was virgin and very deep and powdery. Needless to say, i didnt really move anywhere, as it was too thick, and not sloped enough. So i have now learnt something.

I then went to a path at the end of my road (cycle and foot, but no road near it). This was a little more compacted due to walkers and slightly more sloped than the field. It was only about 200yards long, but enough to get a feel for it. It leads straight down to a steep slope going into the woods, so was imperative that i stop prior to this.

I fell over a grand total of 2 times (on the flat, and just before this drop into the woods), and tried the snow plough to slow down a little, that appeared to work in a fashion (from 7mph to 3mph, lol).

I consider myself of being slightly above average fitness wise (for a 40 year old), as i go out jogging and mountain biking, but boy, after about 30 mins i was fit to drop, and dripping in sweat.

Its all a learning curve, and i have already learnt a little bit more than i knew an hour ago.

Cant wait for another go tomorrow...

BTW, my skis are fairly old (early/mid 90s), but have hardly been used. They only cost me £20 for the skis, boots and poles.

Here are some photos, you can laugh if you want.

PCThug- I like your style! I am a slightly mad Geordie lass and will give most things a try! I admire your spirit! I have done everything by the book and for for the last 4 year's have had a week's instruction whilst skiing- but I fall down- a lot!! I aked my kids why this was so and the answer was that I was just rubbish! Very true! But sometimes you can get bogged down with what to do and what not to do. You might have started skiing in a less conventional manner than most- but after safety, enjoyment of the sport is the most important. Personally, I love it! :D

I'm pleased this thread started again, I was concerned for your safety when I first replied yesterday but also understood you wanting to give it a go.

The skis and boots are definately old school but it will give you a taste of what to expect, you should come on the J2ski holiday next January and enjoy skiing to its full capacity (ie with a bunch of nutters in the mountains).

Be careful out there!

I think maybe you need to go to our 'getting fit for ski-ing' thread and start doing some leg squats etc.

I'm very glad you didn't hurt yourself, and particularly glad you kept away from the road. I went out of control down a hill in Hampstead on a sledge when I was only 5 and landed up in the road and got a big hole in my side. I still have the scar now. But I was very lucky I wasn't run over.

Laugh, noooo. In fact if you put these in the for sale forum,Dave Mac is always looking for some hot new skis
He might be interested in ripping the liners out of the boots too.

Trencher

Trencher, until I bought new Volkls, I would have drooled over skis as young as these. 8)

Hooray, smilies have appeared!

But the Volkls are performing just fine, and I will therefore, refrain from putting in an offer to PCthug!

My boot linings are just worn in, it is the mechanical bits on the sheel that need a hammer and chisel taking to them.
