If we were just talking about the town, we'd probably agree but the OP wants "expert level with the best snow".

St.Anton is among the top ski areas worldwide for strong skiers and has few equals in Austria. PR has nowt to do with it.

Back to the OP...

For a wilder, less developed area with cracking skiing you could also look at The Krippenstein; I've not been there (yet) but always heard good things...

I can recommend piste to powder for off piste guiding, had some excellent days out with them in St Anton, very professional.

Wickers, mate, sometimes its hard to tell with you if you're being serious or not. I know you're pretty anti Austria to start with, and the joking about the food that looks like rubbish is all good banter.
But seriously.....st Anton is a Top class resort with fantastic skiing for good skiers. Yes it gets busy in places, and I know you injured your knee while we were there so you didn't get to see anywhere near enough of the area, and I know you're not a big one for venturing off the pistes, but I've had some of my best skiing in st Anton and round the corner at zurs. Stuben is also one of my favourite little individual areas but I don't think you managed to get round there, although I think Mrs W came for a blast with us while you were nursing your injury.

Yes the resort PR does give it the big one about how good it is, and while we were chilling in our all in hotel in st christoph, a lot of people were having a big one every night in some absolutely banging bars and clubs in the town, which let me assure you from a previous visit really is a lively and great night out, provided you've got deep pockets of course, but hey that's skiing resorts generally for you.

Now, if anyone asks about top quality skiing, off piste, steep runs, great nightlife etc, st Anton is right up there. It might not have been your cup of tea. I know other friends who came on the same trip said they didn't think it was much good in st Anton, but that was probably because the slopes were generally too difficult for them and they werent able to benefit from such a fabulous ski area. I'm sure your injury caused you to see the place in a somewhat negative light but I might be wrong.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

It not the first place I'd recommend for beginners or intermediates, there are far better resorts for them, but for expert level skiers there is little to match it in Europe. The off piste is amazing, as are the itineraries.

St Anton must have had the world's biggest traffic jam yesterday. Drove past on the way back from Dolomites and it took hours to travel a few kilometres near the Lech\St A turnoff. Carnage.

I have seemed to upset a few people, my opinion for what it is worth is an honest appraisal and I do not really care if it differs from others and it is certainly not anti Austrian, yep Tony is correct I did hurt my knee two weeks before the holiday but I managed to see enough of the skiing including the odd black, and i can honestly say I did not see any difficulty in the piste skiing, I have skied more difficult blacks in other resorts ...... I really do think that we get a tad carried away with the so called big resorts.
and I'm sorry Adders but that includes the PR.
Bon ski
