Hi there,

Hoping someone here can offer some advice. I was looking into down layers (for the Mrs) as last year we went out at -20 and she got uncomfortably cold.

Has anyone got any views on using them? looks like it's -10 next week so I'd rather she was all sorted before we fly out.

Any info greatly appreciated,

Cheers T1b

I am using down layers (either a vest or a thin jacket) usually under the shell and haven't been cold yet. merino base layer/fleece/down layer/shell works fine at - 10C. They are fairly thin and lightweight so easy to put away in a back pack if it gets too warm. Patagonia, Peak Performance, Dynafit, Salomon and Norrona will usually have them in their collections.

I looked at gilets yesterday as I was concerned about being cold next week. However, to order from sportspursuit there in not enough time and you look and feel a bit like Michelin man if using a normal jacket. You would need a shell and then a down or down type gilet which would then be great. If not changing jacket would suggest going to a shop and trying on. All the best.

The Mrs did try one at the North Face under her jacket and she seemed happy enough but wasn't sure it was down and wasn't too keen on the Electric Green Colour (which, to be fair was grim). I think we'll get one as half the problem was the ski jacket she got last season wasn't up to the job when it got proper cold.

Hand warmers can only do so much :)

I have a cheap and cheerful down gilet from ALDI, really toasty warm and packs down to nothing. The heat pads you get for back pain in all the pound shops are awesome for having the effect of adding a layer of clothing with minimal bulk.

Cheers for the info :)

Going to get one tomorrow night (if it fits etc etc)

Many thanks,

To be honest you are much better just having a waterproof hard shell vs some form of padded ski jacket. Much more versatile and can be used summer and winter.
Normally I would wear the following upon leaving house and carry a backpack to strip off. If no wind, powder or chance or rain I would not carry any waterproof jacket unless was going touring vs piste skiing.
2 x thermal base layers (make sure the lowest one has sleeves that you poke your thumb through. Exposed or cold wrists are one major cause of cold hands)
Down jacket (sleeveless but I would buy a full armed one if was again)
Soft shell
Waterproof hard shell (only worn if wet and or windy)

I guess in ideal world I would have a down type jacket that would fit over everything.
