Hi.
I am looking for some advice on going skiing for new year in 2014. There will be 4 adults and 2 children, but only 2 of us will be skiing.
We were thinking of going for 4 days from the 30th December. We are novice skiers, so we're unsure of what the costs should be for that time of year.
I have done a quick search and the costs are around £800pp for a week. As there are only 2 of us skiing, it seems like a lot. What are the best places to search for ski breaks.
Many thanks.

Sounds about right ,,i'd say from the journey to the airport, parking ,the chalet, lift pass ,spending money and the journey back costs me around £1200pp , i could probably do it for £1000 if i didn't go out every night for a few drinks and eat so much whilst out on the mountain :-)

At New Year, the days are short and cold. Hence the accommodation facilities will be important for the non-skiers and children. What ages are the children? Old enough to go into kindergarten ski school?
Would everyone be interested in a place with a swimming pool?
It would perhaps be better to form a specification first, and then ask J2skiers, who have a combined snow knowledge greater than the Matterhorn.....

From my experience there is not a huge amount to do if not skiing. Some resorts have swimming pools and spas. Most skiing hotels are fairly basic with little to do during the day. It is lot of cash to spend if not all parties are skiing. Also if the weather is very poor getting around will be difficult if you hire a car. This all sounds a bit negative but it would be a shame to spend a lot and not really enjoy it.

Thanks for the info guy's.
We're not to bothered about "not everybody skiing" as they will still enjoy it with the children and it is only for 4 days.
Which countries/resorts should I be looking for, for novice skiers and somewhere that's not really expensive.
Thanks.

Have you thought about actually going for a week? Sounds counter-intuitive as you're asking about the cost but the price for 4 days will be close to that for 6.
The transport costs are the same, you will end up with a higher per night cost for accommodation not using the whole week and lift passes are also better value for 6 days. Just a thought!
For value (and potentially more flexibility on accommodation) I would suggest Austria, possibly Mayrhofen. Good sking, decent resort for non ski activities and not too pricey!
Although I am a Francophile I would avoid French resorts if cost is an issue and I would also strongly suggest you avoid Bulgaria where the allure of a cheap holiday will be tempered by a rubbish holiday!
