Anyone think one is any better than the other for nervous novices with a few weeks' skiing experience? Am looking at booking either the Olymp hotel in Hochgurgl or the Jenewein in Obergurgl, decision to be made quickly as I need to get on with it
We like to be fairly near ski schools or beginner slopes and don't mind lack of nightlife as long as we can have a few relaxing beers of an evening.

Obergurgl is bar far the bigger village, but from the map it looks like everything is close by. More to see and do in the bigger village?

Thanks Bandit. That's what I thought. Unless there's a really compelling reason for choosing Hochgurgl, I was veering towards Obergurgl as it's bigger.

Allie,
I have skied in Obergurgl and Hochgurgl, but I don't know the answer to your question, I'm afraid. Hochgurgl is sort of stuck half way up the mountain with pistes above and below it. Obergurgl is lower down with pistes only above it, and is more like a 'real' village and larger with more facilities. Hochgurgl seemed to be just luxury hotels, but I thought myself it was more attractive because of that.
We stayed in Obergurgl and it was great. I would imagine Hochgurgl has a smaller ski school, if that makes any difference to you?

We stayed in the Olymp last January and in an Obergurgl B&B this January. We had great holidays in both but definitely preferred Obergurgl. The Olymp is a superb hotel with excellent and plentiful food plus pool and spa etc. but apart from about 5 or six fairly luxurious hotels and a ski hire shop, there is nothing else.
Obergurgl has much more going on in terms of restaurants, bars, shops etc. but without being rowdy. There is also the excellent apres ski at the Nederhutte on the final blue run into resort!
I think you have made the right choice :D
