There is some good illustrative video in the Ski Technique section - see Skiing Carved Turns.

Moguls

Hi Simon,

There's some video and good advice from Warren Smith on How to Ski Moguls here on j2ski.

I'm no expert in the bumps but the initial challenge for me was to really loosen up the edge grip (compared to piste skiing) and let the skis skid / drift a bit more to kill the speed. I'm still pants though...

Naaa, everyone (else) should go at Half Term... and leave January and March for the rest of us...

Snow for Niederau

Just to clarify... if it snows in Niederau next week, you'll take everyone on j2ski on holiday with you?

I'm in...

But seriously, we will keep our fingers crossed for you and if there was space on our desks we'd be dancing on them... probably. Not much snow in the forecast at the moment but it does look like staying cold at least.
Warm Baselayers

Can't help on the specifics of the HH range but I can tell you that you'll notice a huge difference between a cotton t-shirt and any modern base layer. Been there, done that and lost the numerous t-shirts I used to wear for skiing.

All the main clothing makers have good base layer ranges now; your best bet is to have a good look over them in your nearest ski shop. So long as the materials are clearly marked as "moisture wicking" then you've immediately got a huge gain over the cotton t.

Personally I find it most flexible to have thinner base layers - and to wear one or two depending on the temperatures. If you tend to feel the cold, you may just want to go for a dual-layer base straight off. The zip neck styles are good as you can un-zip when on the piste (or in the cafe) and then zip-up tight while riding the lift.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how warm even the very thin base layers keep you.

HTH,

Take my skis or rent?

Hmmm, it may be true... this was in an e-mail I got from a friend just a week ago;

I'm currently in Whistler and having to rent Fat Boys cos the snow is too deep and powdery

I hate it when that happens - but if you get the same conditions you may well find yourself wanting something fatter than an All Mountain ski.

La Clusaz's not pedestrianised but otherwise fits your bill nicely - reckon you'll love it if you've not been before. It's a regular stomping ground of ours and we'll be there again in April 2007 (if not before).
Ischgl

Current Snow Report for Ischgl doesn't look too bad but the Ischgl Snow Forecast shows rising temperatures after the weekend...

It does look like there's enough to ski on and you should have clear weather at least so it's not all bad.

It'll be approximately one gazillion times better than cold, damp and foggy old England! 8)
