can anyone recommend places to stay when stopping on route to the Alps (Morillion). Djon seems to be a good stop 4 hrs from calais? Also will there be much open on the Sunday 2 Jan in France?

Family of 4 - 2 adults and a one year old and a 4 year old.

Hi there,
if you are looking for somewhere to stop with kids then Troyes is possibly better than Dijon - it is still a good 4+ hr drive and has lots of reasonable hotels. I stayed there in October and got 2 rooms on the day for 90 euros inc breakfast on the south side of the town.
There are very few hotels just at the side of the road as it is a dual carriage way all the way south from calais. Troyes is about 5-10 miles west of the main road.

Kind regards
Matthew

Push a bit further and you have Nuit st George just south of Dijon nice town and the Ibis there costs €55.

I've used Etap hotels on the motorways, plenty of them about, and around £30 a night for a double/family room

We often stop off at Le Val Moret motel just below Troyes, only 5 minutes off the A5 Autoroute at exit 22. It's a 3* Logis de France with an excellent but unpretentious, family-friendly restaurant. It's about 4 hours from Calais and another 4-5 hours to the Alps. As already mentioned, Troyes is also well-paced for Campanile etc. accomodation as well.

Just another thing 4hrs is a bit optimistic, traveling with children the tolls (road works at Riems)and good weather would still say more like 5 and a bit hours.
