My wonderful first time ever ski in Obergurgl has ended and I'm already wondering about next winter's holiday.
I wasn't brilliant on the slopes and was restricted to gentle blues. I did progress from snow plough turns to some sort of parallel effort though I still need lots of practice ( in not falling over!!!)
So,for their second holiday what is it that people tend to do in the way of instruction????
Ski Instruction next time or not????

IMO stick with the classes for another year at least, once you get comfortable with parallel turns on reds you can then dip in and out of lessons as you feel the need to tweak your technique. Having said all that I know people who have been skiing 20 odd years and still take lessons for the whole week, they are good skiers and always placed in the top level class but they like the social side of things.
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

I'm with Freezy on this. Take a full week of classes next time. I've been skiing 26 winters and I now take coaching, short focused sessions to iron out problems. I do have to practice (drills) what I'm taught though )

Invest three years in becoming a capable skier. After that, you may elect to continue with lessons.
Long term, your progress will be much quicker

Knapdog,
I would also say have another week of lessons - maybe just in the morning, and practice in the afternoons.
I have now had 3 years (4 weeks) of lessons, and learnt a great deal, but I still feel I would definitely benefit from more lessons.
I find the instructors tell you common sense sort of things, as well, that you may be a long time working out on your own - like, for example, if a ski comes off on a steep slope turn yourself round so that the ski that's still on is on the downhill side before you try and put it back on (or if you lose both put the downhill one on first).
It also depends on how much you enjoy lessons, and whether you think they're worth the extra cash. They are expensive. Personally, I enjoy lessons - both the social side of things and seeing how much I improve each time. But some people prefer to ski in a group with their family, or friends all week, and don't bother with lessons once they've learnt the basics.
I think it's very much a matter of personal preference.

I'm with the others on this one. Have at least another week of lessons to master the turns and the steeper pistes and then maybe a top up lesson or two each year. Like many other subjects on here there's those who have lessons and those that don't; those who go private and others who prefer group lessons. Only you truly know where your abilities lie. Be honest, and if you think you'd be better with some more instruction then have it. It's your cash and your future enjoyment at the end of the day.

Only you can answer that question by looking at other skiers around you and make the comparison where you stand ability wise

I had my third ski holiday last month and did another week at ski school.I would like to think that i improved a lot but its probably down to just spending more time on the slopes . Not sure if i picked up that much from our instructor, we had quite a large group which did not help . Although i could quite happily manage to a degree with out doing ski school next year i probably will do it again .I do enjoy it for meeting up with such a diverse group of people who i would not have met before who are of a similar level.Another big plus is that you will be shown the best of the mountain from your instructor .
Hope this helps
